Clean liquid fuels from Biomass via Fischer Tropsch Synthesis Steam reformation of biomass to produce syngas, then Hydrogenate CO to produce liquid fuels (Fischer-Tropsch Synthesis) CO + H2O a CnHm + b H2 + c CO2 Key is control selectivity, yield by suitable choice of catalyst, catalyst support, processing conditions, processing system design Goal is to reduce byproducts, increase energy efficiency, produce tailored product mix

Genomics/Proteomics Initiatives Modeling Biological Systems –All living organisms generate and distribute energy –Can be a model for new engineering approaches Division of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Cell Biology –New unit at USF, rapidly expanding –Focus on study of cell processes using genomics, proteomics, computational biology and biosensors –Modeling complex biological signal pathways at the genome level –Partners with additional Proteomics/Genomics components: Florida Center of Excellence in Biomolecular Identification and Targeted Therapeutics Moffitt Cancer Center –Partners with additional computational biology expertise include Mathematics and Chemistry Departments at USF USF is poised to be involved with proteomic/genomic approaches to understanding complex biological systems in cells that generate and distribute energy
