Three World Religions MAIN IDEA: Three major world religions began in Southwest Asia. Judaism, Christianity, and Islam have become major world faiths. All three religions are examples of Monotheism, or the belief in one God.

Judaism 2000BC The oldest of the three religions is Judaism.
Judaism is a monotheistic religion. The followers of Judaism today are knows as Jews. According to Jewish belief, the Jews are descended from Abraham.

Judaism The Torah is the most important Jewish scripture.
It contains the basic laws of Judaism. Followers of Judaism pray in a synagogue.

Judaism Today there are over 15 million followers of Judaism scattered throughout the world. A large number of those people live in the Jewish nation of Israel. Over six million live in the United States.

Christianity- First Century AD
Judaism gave rise to another monotheistic religion-Christianity. Founded in Southwest Asia Founder-Jesus Christ Followers are called Christians

Christianity Stories about Jesus and the writings of early Christians became part of the Christian holy book-the Bible. Place of worship is called a church.

Christianity In time, Christianity spread to Europe, where it became the dominant religion. Today, it is the world’s largest religion, with over 2.1 billion followers.

Islam AD ISLAM is the name given to the monotheistic religion preached by the prophet Muhammad . Founded in Southwest Asia (Saudi Arabia) Followers are called Muslims.

Islam The holy book of Islam is the Koran or Quran.
Allah, is the Islamic God. Place of worship is called a Mosque.

Islam Over several centuries, Islam expanded into areas of Asia, North Africa, and parts of Europe. It has about 1.3 billion followers, most of them in the region south and east of the Mediterranean Sea.

Activity DIALOGUE BOX Assignment: On Page _____ of your notebook, you will create three characters. Each character will represent one of the three religions. Your character should include the following: A symbol of the religion on the character’s clothing. A dialogue box. Dialogue box should introduce the character (name), and the three important facts about the character’s religion.
