 Length – 5 weeks with 8 lessons being taught in this time frame.  Main Subject Matter – Reading comprehension and social studies.

 Math – compare and contrast two math topics and have the students see math in a different view.  Art – Do a small art painting compare and contrast to teach the students how a critique works.  Almost any subject can be used with this unit because you can find two things in a subject that could be used for a compare and contrast.

 Long Term Goals – Students will gain a full understanding of the vocabulary used when doing a compare and contrast. Students will also see how compare and contrast can be used everyday.  Objectives –  Given two short readings, students will be able to complete a Venn diagram with 100% accuracy.  Given two objects found in the classroom, students will create three comparisons, 3 contrasts with 100% accuracy.  Given a worksheet with compare and contrast problems, students will show vocabulary understanding by completing the worksheet with 100% accuracy.

 This unit was wrapped around social studies and specifically Native American tribes.  Compare and contrast two short readings on Native American tribes using a venn diagram.  Compare and contrast two found objects in the classroom with a partner. Using any method you prefer create 3 comparisons and 3 contrasts.

 Teacher may use computer program to demonstrate the proper way to use a venn diagram.  Students may use computers to build venn diagrams.  Assessments may be taken from a computer based test on compare and contrast.

 Very important for this lesson especially due to length and complexity.  Have students and guardian both create a venn diagram about two objects found in their kitchen. When done they will compare and contrast their venn diagrams with each other and will be returned with a guardian signature.

 Pre-Assessment- students will have been showing an interest in how things are alike and how they are different around them. The students will also show a strong understanding of comprehension and test taking skills. The lesson will be introduced with a venn diagram first so that everyone either gets review on that topic or is introduced to it as the unit moves forward.  Formative- Most of the formative assessment that will be done during this unit will be on the students white boards. The students will show the instructor their white boards during group lessons to show that they have full understanding. If white boards are not being used then a thumbs up/thumbs down model will be demonstrated to see how the classes overall feeling is of what is being taught.  Summative- The evidence that the objectives have been met will show in the work that will be graded by the teacher. The students will need to really show a strong understanding of the venn diagram to get full points on the assessment. A number grade will be given for each assignment so that the teacher and the student are able to see the progress or decline in work. This way anything that comes up and looks out of place can be addressed in a timely manner.
