2 Today’s Objectives Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of urban development and Smart Growth by  Completing a graphic organizer  Examining motivations for Smart Growth  Reimagining a neighborhood by creating their own city plan  Completing an HSA aligned exit ticket

3 How do we try to make cities livable? One major way is by zoning properties. Zoning laws are regulations that state where homes and businesses can be located Zoning is a powerful tool that can be used to control reckless use of land and encourage growth

4 Residential: Places where people live. Not designed for high traffic.  Row homes  Houses  Apartment buildings  Nursing Homes Types of Zoning Areas

5 Commercial Property that is used for businesses.  McDonalds  7/11  Best Buy  Safeway Types of Zoning Areas

6 Industrial Factories, warehouses, placed that tend to be noisy and busy.  Domino Sugar  Baltimore Docks  Utz Factory Types of Zoning Areas

7 Identify which Zoning Area this is: Starbucks wants to open up a new store. COMMERCIAL

8 Identify which Zoning Area this is: Much of Baltimore is row homes. Residential

9 Identify which Zoning Area this is: This movie theatre is in Harbor East COMMERCIAL

10 Identify which Zoning Area this is: Every city needs a water treatment plant Industrial

11 Identify which Zoning Area this is: The famous American poet, Edgar Allen Poe lived here. Residential

12 Identify which Zoning Area this is: Boy, I bet these machines are noisy. Industrial

13  A cities and suburbs have grown, the countryside has gotten smaller  This is bad because land is not being used as effectively as it could be.

16 One way to do this is to get more out of land we’re already using.

17 Economic development  Zoning is useful in economic development  Mayor Rawlings- Blake is proposing that blocks of vacant property be re- zoned from residential to commercial. What are some advantages ? What are some disadvantages?
