5. ArcGIS is the blanket term used for ESRI's core software suite. –ArcGIS 9.0 currently installed in this lab –ArcMap is the interface used Co-exists with ArcView Performs many of same functions –Has numerous additional extensions –More suitable for 3D applications ArcGIS???

6. Which is best? Several of the aspects of ArcView were introduced into ArcGIS, but it still is less powerful then ArcInfo The Windows interface is smoother but much more cumbersome in ArcGIS than in ArcView. ArcGIS more powerful but the older ArcInfo even more so Depends in part upon experience and preference –(i.e. Unix vs. MS Windows, PC vs. Mac) –For those familiar with ArcView, initial transition may be difficult Depends heavily on $$$ -- ArcView is much more affordable to smaller organizations and institutions.

7. Finally Where should you go? Depends –Do you want to be a GIS user? –GIS technician? –GIS designer? –Someone the knows about GIS, but will leave the details to others (don’t want to repair your own car).
