7 Leadership Overview As a young adult, the importance of leadership is vital in the real world. Leadership is a way students can success in the classroom as well as their future endeavors. Many high students believe they are incapable of leading in any form; however, with confidence and tools these high students are capable of leading.

8 Leadership Objectives Students will: Learn the importance of leadership Evaluate people in their lives who exhibit leadership skills Develop their definition of leadership

9 Leadership Icebreaker – 10 minutes Silence: This Ice breaker is to show the importance of Leadership skills as well as communication skills. Divide the students into two small groups. Ask the students to “line up according to birthdates without speaking.” This is only instruction given to the students.

10 Leadership Icebreaker continued… NOTE: Students may communicate to each other through hand motions or writing on a paper or any method the students see fit. The first team to complete the task wins if the order of the birthdates is correct. At the end of the ice breaker, ask the winning group to discuss their method of communicating to each other.

11 Leadership Icebreaker continued… Engage the entire group in asking the following questions before introduction the Activity: Was this ice breaker difficult to complete without the ability to speak? Did leaders emerge from the group? Would a leader be helpful to have in this ice breaker? Why or Why not?

12 Leadership Activity – 20 minutes Leadership Characteristics: This activity is for the students to establish their definition of Leadership. Divide the students into groups of two or three.

13 Leadership Activity continued… In the groups, each student should recount a story of a person they feel is an influential leader. After each story, the group should identify the characteristics they feel made the person a good leader. Note: Inform the students of the “No Judgment Zone”. Everyone should feel comfortable stating their thoughts about leadership without being judged.

14 Leadership Activity continued… From the stories, the students should create a list of all the characteristics of a good leader. This list will be presented to the entire group to show the similarities and differences of good leader’s characteristics. The students should be actively participating in this activity and should be provoked to think about themselves as well as these examples of leaders.

15 Leadership Classroom Discussion – 20 minutes Top Rank Discussion: This discussion is to show that every individual has their own definition of a good leader and leadership. Using the list of Leadership Characteristic created by the entire group, the students should rank these characteristics. After all the students, open discussion on the way they ranked certain characteristics higher than others.
