Advancements in WD1 Data Collection Methods Presented by: Robert Keller Date: May 12 th, 2015

Overview 2013 – Started investigation into current costs and whether there is an adequate alternative to accurately make flow measurements and telemeter data 2014 – Acquisition of equipment, consultant aid and telemetry contracts. Installation of various site arrays for testing and configuration of online data communication platform. 2015 – Testing of new telemetry system vs. the current system as well as implementation of additional continually monitored sites.

2013 – System Sensor Data Logger/ Transmitter SatelliteUSBR/ Processing Web/ WD1 Data accuracy, quality, availability and reliability are good However... USBR started charging $350/site/yr in 2008 (62 Sites) $$$

Goal USBR Fees Implemented Reduce Hydromet O&M Costs

Possible Solution A combination of cellular and radio communication – Costs as low as $35/site/yr – O&M can be managed in house (WD1 staff) with no significant increase in cost

WD1/ Processing/ Web Future System Sensor Data Logger/ Transmitter SatelliteUSBR/ Processing Web/ WD1 Data Logger/ Cell Modem

9 Sites installed – 3 sites are duplicating hydromet data – 3 sites had continuous monitoring equipment and telemetry was added – 1 site had an inadequate measurement section and no telemetry – 2 pumps were configured with a variety of measuring devices and telemetry Configuration of a online data communication platform (Vista Data Vision) 2014 – Site Implementation

2014 – Configuration of Online data Communication Platform www.waterdistrict1.com

Additional Costs Savings

Break Even Point

Additional Functionality O&M easier, less costly, more timely Expand telemetry network Improve Website and Data Retrieval for water users Provides more timely data rather than delayed data Alerts for users Lateral canal data hosting Automation

Summary Goal (2015): Determine if cellular telemetry is a viable alternative to Hydromet data Expand continuous data collection – Telemeter and gage diversions not currently on Hydromet – Telemeter and gage pumps
