The Positive Discipline System At Headlands School we operate the Positive Discipline System to support your behaviour in school. It is based on 3 principles: 1.All young people enjoy being effectively rewarded for their effort; 2.Most young people need clear guidelines in terms of what constitutes acceptable behaviour; and 3.Effective communication between teachers, parents/carers and students is essential for effective schools.

The Positive Discipline System The Student Planner Central to our success is the Student Planner. This is the centre of communication between school and parents/carers. No personalising of the Student Planner is permitted and lost or damaged Student Planners need to be replaced at a cost of £2.50. Rewards Positive recognition of student achievement will be placed in the Student's Planner in the form of stamps from your teachers; stamps lead to Vivo credits which can be used to purchase prizes and in turn lead to a system of achievement certificates. We have high expectations of all students and we expect them to meet particular Certificate targets at certain points in the year: Christmas Holiday – Head of Year Certificate Easter Holiday – Deputy Head Special Certificate Summer Holiday – Headteacher Special Certificate Where students achieve ahead or beyond these levels then it can be assumed that academic progress will be accelerated. Where these targets are not met, then parents/carers and students can assume that academic potential is not being fulfilled. Additionally, students' performance will also be rewarded in other ways: Students from each form group will be referred to a member of the Senior Leadership Team for praise. The sending of 'departmental postcards' to students who display particularly high levels of commitment; The continuation and expansion of major awards ceremonies each half term during assemblies and at the end of the academic year; The linking of other rewards such as trips to academic performance, attendance and behaviour.

The Positive Discipline System Sanctions At times, of course, we have to recognise and accept that young people will not behave or work in a manner which is acceptable. Where misdemeanours are minor a clear 'verbal warning' will be issued. Where misdemeanours are more serious or are persistent in nature, then comments will be placed in the Student Planner. If a number of negative comments accumulate, an after-school Detention will follow. No student will be exempt from an after-school detention. Where student behaviour is particularly disruptive or when comments in the planner accumulate, a period of Isolation or Exclusion will automatically follow. Isolation Isolation is an extremely serious sanction. The Isolation Room has a functional and purposeful environment with a bank of work which covers every curriculum area. Students will be 'isolated' in the fullest sense of the word. A shorter lunch break will be taken and at no time will the isolated student be allowed to socialise with other students. The room will be fully supervised at all times. The duration of the day in the Isolation Room will be from 8.30am to 2.45 pm. All students who are placed in Isolation must bring their equipment for that day. All mobile phones must be collected by a member of staff and locked away until the end of the day. A student who is late to Isolation, arriving after 8.30am, without a good reason will repeat the full day at the earliest opportunity. The level of commitment displayed by the student will be recorded on the Isolation Record Sheets at the end of each period with the student's performance being monitored at the end of each school day. If a student behaves inappropriately in Isolation, they will be issued with a written warning. If their behaviour does not improve, a second written warning will be issued either by a member of the Senior Leadership team or Head of Year and they will have to repeat the day. If their behaviour warrants a third warning, the student will also be given a Fixed Term Exclusion issued by the Headteacher. It is essential to point out, that we expect very few students to be doing anything other than enjoying working well at school, receiving their rewards and benefits that follow such an approach. Any student who forgets their Student Planner on or after the second occasion will be Isolated.

Mobile Phones Use of Mobile Phones – Students should not have mobile phones out in lessons unless by agreement with teacher. If students do get their phones out in lessons staff will follow Positive Discipline protocol. The consequence being mobile phones will be confiscated until the end of the lesson. If a student objects staff will call Emergency Cover (ECov) and their mobile phone will be placed in the safe until the end of the day and parents/carers informed by their Head of Year in a letter. Repeat offenders will have further consequences implemented i.e. students/parents advised students are not allowed to bring mobile phones into school.

Uniform Look in your Student Planners at the School Uniform & Dress Code. Students must wear the correct uniform and wear it with pride i.e. dress smartly.

Fire Drill Explain the Fire Drill Procedure and ensure you know where your Fire Assembly Point is.

Presentation in Books Your subject exercise books are your permanent Learning Record. It is very important you do the following: 1.Keep the books clean and tidy i.e. do not graffiti on or in them. 2.Use every page. 3.Underline your titles and dates with a RULER. 4.When drawing tables use a RULER. 5.Stick worksheets into your book.

Assessing your Learning We have a colour coded way of assessing your learning. Have a look at the poster displayed in your classroom, and see the next slide. WRITE in your Student Planner what the different coloured pens mean

Feedback & Assessment Written Feedback Teachers will provide written feedback to student work at least every 3 lessons and/or pieces of work using PURPLE pens. Subjects will mark for literacy using an ORANGE highlighter drawing attention to spelling corrections. Marked work will be promptly returned and students given time to correct it, reflect on it and/or improve it on a regular basis using RED pens. Self and Peer Assessment Teachers will build in opportunities for peer-assessment. Peer assessment comments will be written in GREEN pen

Homework All teachers will set regular homework using the homework app – www.myhomeworkapp.com – set yours up now please.www.myhomeworkapp.com You can expect 30 minutes per subject per week. Sanctions will follow for non-completion of homework – these will be communicated by teachers to parents/carers in your Student Planners. VIVOs will be awarded where homework is good.

House System/Challenges At Headlands School you are a member of one of 4 houses led by Mr Stamper (Director of Community): 1.Lords – Mr Walmsley 2.Millennium – Mrs Stamford2.Millennium – Mrs Stamford 3.Twickenham – Mrs Millar 4.Wembley – Mr Gouldthorpe Your first “Challenge” will be to take part in an inter-house Rugby Union Tournament. Everyone can take part either as a player or spectator. After October half-term another “Challenge” will be set to be completed during Tutor Time. You will also have House Assemblies once per term. The House system is a competitive one. You will gain points for your House based on the completion of Challenges, your attendance at school and how many VIVO’s you collect. We complete the year with our Annual Sports Day when the Houses compete against one another in a fierce Sporting extravaganza.

Friday Quiz Every Friday Tutor groups enter the Tutor Quiz. At least once a year our Tutor group will create a Friday Quiz for all the Tutor groups to complete.

Tutor Representatives Over the next few weeks you and your Tutor group will need to elect 4 Tutor Representatives – 2 for the Student Council and 2 for the House Council. Your Reps will be the voice of your Tutor group. They will attend meetings and discuss all of the “good” and not so good things happening at School. Your feedback will be listened to and acted upon by Mrs Bone & Mr Stamper. The Reps need to be people that you think will represent your point of view clearly and will be reliable and energetic! Have a think…IT COULD BE YOU!
