3 Revolutions in France The French society was divided into three groups called estates: Clergy (first estate) Nobles (second estate) Common people (third estate) Most French people were in the third estate and paid heavy taxes and had few rights.

4 The Start of The French Revolution King Louis XVI refused to give up any of his powers. On July 14,1789, a mob stormed the Bastille, a Paris prison which marked the French Revolution. French Revolution- a political movement that removed the French King from power.

5 King Louis XVI and his wife Marie Antoinette were executed.

6 The Reign of Terror During the Reign of Terror in 1793, the republic’s government killed thousands of opponents who had backed the monarchy.

7 Napoleon Takes Power Napoleon Bonaparte rose quickly in the French army. In 1799, he took power in France as a dictator. He wanted to create a mighty French army. In Napoleonic Wars, he conquered much of Europe.

8 Napoleon is Defeated Napoleon’s invasion of Russia proved disastrous. The French Army was Weakened and Napoleon Was defeated in 1815. He was exiled and the republic strengthened.

9 Revolutions Break Out In 1848, revolutions broke out across Europe. By 1871, Germany and Italy had Become unified nations.

10 Summary The French Revolution was when enlightment ideas inspired some French people to demand a voice in government. Napoleon Bonaparte rose quickly in the French Revolution. In 1799, he took power in France as a dictator. Napoleon wanted to create a mighty French army. In Napoleonic Wars, Napoleon conquered much of Europe. His invasion on Russia proved disastrous. The French Army was weakened and Napoleon was defeated in 1815. French domination led to growing in nationalism.
