 One of the most helpful and successful inventions was the snowmobile. The snowmobile has really helped a lot of people in snowy weather who weren't able to get around by car. › Places like Alaska have really valued from the snowmobile.  People bought them and rode them just for enjoyment. They took it on vacation, or maybe to a nearby lodge with a lot of snow.

 Television was a big hit. If you had a TV you were very popular.  In the beginning the TV only had a few shows, but it was still fun for the kids.  A scientist did some research, and they calculated that kids between the ages of 10-16 watched about 6 hours of TV a day.  The most popular TV show for teenagers was the show called American Bandstand.  Most kids watched this show rather than doing their homework.  Hit TV showsTV

 Some other shows that were popular were:  I Love Lucy  The Honeymooners  The Families of the Fifties  The Twilight Zone  Mickey Mouse Club House back Click here to watch video on 1950 TV showshere

 During World War Two toy companies were actually making supplies for the war. So afterwards they had fascinating ideas for new dolls and games.  They started to see wonderful new material, like plastic.  When Silly Putty started there were over 30 million Silly Putty eggs sold. In that year Lego was introduced. Matchbox Cars, a favorite to little boys now were invented in 1954.  Hula Hoops became a fad in 1958, but it was shortly over in 1959 when Barbie took over.  There were also many other toys back in the 50s. Click here to see list of toys that were most popular.here 1948: trains 1949: Silly Putty 1954: Match Box cars 1957: Hula Hoops 1959: Barbie

 Movies were also popular back then. The 1950's was the birthplace of the teen film.  The first 3-D movie came out: Bwana Devil.  In the period following WWII when most of the films were idealized with portrayals of men and women, young people wanted new and exciting symbols of rebellion.  Hollywood responded to audience demands - the 1950s saw the rise of the anti-hero - with stars like newcomers James Dean, Paul Newman.  First movie that came out about teenage love was A summer place.  To see a list of movies that were popular in the 1950s and get some background information on them, click here.here.

 The teens of the fifties had many role models. Some of them were known as "hip", "groovy", or "cool". Some of the teen idols were Frankie Avalon, Bobby Darin, Fabian, Ricky Nelson, Paul Anka, and Bobby Rydell. Below is just a list of popular idols. Frankie Avalon Bobby Darin Fabian Bobby Rydell Ricky Nelson Paul Anka

 "Ain't nothing but a hound dog" was barely heard through a crowd of wild teenagers of the 1950's listening to their teen idol, Elvis!  This teen idol was perfect for this crowd of teens. Teenagers in the fifties wanted to be different and alike at the same time. They wanted to be cool, but "different".  This is why Elvis was perfect for them. Rock and Roll was brought into the world at this time.  The teenagers loved him though, they thought he was the greatest thing on Earth.

 The decade of the Fifties gave birth to Rock and Roll. When Bill Haley's Rock Around the Clock became popular in 1955, the nation learned to enjoy a whole new sound.  But, Rock wasn't the only music of the Fifties. Other artists with other songs had folks singing for much of the decade.  The feel-good innocence of a lot of the Fifties music reflects on the post World War II optimism in America. The young people of the time, teenagers, hadn't struggled through the war years, so they were looking for something more exciting. They discovered that greatness of Rock and Roll. See chart
