Politecnico di Milano An attitude toward innovation since 1863 Emanuela Colombo, Rector’s Delegate to “Cooperation for Development” - Politecnico di Milano Gianluca Valentini Rector’s Delegate to “Intellectual property and Spin off” – Politecnico di Milano

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Overview The Politecnico di Milano (POLIMI): An attitude toward innovation from 1863 Education, Research, Technology transfer Two case studies: ASP and Eni Policies and examples from Technology transfer office TT models Spin off examples

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Italy, Science, Technology and Innovation Italy has “some” traditions in coupling science with innovation Leonardo Da Vinci (1452-1519) An artist and a scientist Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) The father of modern science

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Italy, Science, Technology and Innovation Italy has “some” historical experiences in the application of research for achieving innovation Engineering (2000 years ago) Architecture Design More recently

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Politecnico di Milano is a Public State University founded in 1863 thanks to a strong cooperation established with the local industrial setting in Milano Politecnico, Science, Technology and Innovation Politecnico di Milano has always been linked with the industrial setting Engineering (since 1863) Architecture (since 1865) Industrial Design (since 2000)

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 The logo originates from Raffaello’s fresco The School of Athens, Located in the Stanze Vaticane, Roma Politecnico, Science, Technology and Innovation Politecnico di Milano has kept in its logo an original and creative attitude …

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Vision and Mission The Politecnico di Milano is a science and technology university preparing engineers, architects and industrial designers through a variety of innovative courses taking care of specific technical competences and devoted to all sides of education including deontological and ethical asset. Today our vision is focused on two key tasks: 1. Promoting multidisciplinary projects and internal cooperation (INTERNAL). 2. Enforcing the partnership with stakeholders (EXTERNAL) The original mission is focused on three pillars 1.Teaching and education 2. Research activities 3. Knowledge & Technology Transfer to industry/community

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 New Social challenges leads to a more extended vision The 8 Millennium Goals are the frontiers of development The role of Universities in the Third Millennium The interdependency principles lead to the need of managing a global society Universities have a role to play for global development The aim at Sustainable development show the need of new paradigms for development The economic crisis confirm it!!! A: Human development B: Socio-Economic development C: Knowledge & Technology development D: Glocal development

Research, Education and Technology Transfer at the Politecnico di Milano

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Approach to Teaching and Research Teaching is the natural framework for spreading knowledge and generating competences TeachingResearch Research is the added tools for updating knowledge, contributing to teaching, developing critical capability Knowledge and Technology Transfer is the indicator for - proving the effectiveness of academic culture; - assuring a long lasting cooperation with industry, Tech Transf

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Research Areas Politecnico di Milano has 16 departments for research Biotechnology and Health Information Communication Technologies Materials, Micro and Nanotechnologies Aeronautics and Space Energy Environment Transport Citizens, Enterprises and Governance Built Environment, Infrastructures,Urban and Land Planning Cultural Heritage Industrial Products and Processes Mathematics Physics “Our research must integrate analytical calculation and numerical modelling with experimental approach to obtain reliable results “ Prof Giulio Ballio, Magnificent Rector

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Scientific research Innovation is a leverage for development and the scientific research is a precondition to promote it for fostering relationships and building an autonomous development Somewhere innovation aims more at overcoming the frontier of technology Somewhere else innovation aims more at redesigning technology for the local contest Innovation is still an instrument to overcome frontiers…the geographical economic and social barriers limiting human and social development Technology & Innovation in the Third Millennium need to rely on Human factors, Anthropological asset, Individual /Social Responsibility, Ethics to support the civil society in the “challenge for global Development and human promotion” Research Areas Innovation is a challange but it …. rely mainly on human attitude and capacity

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Innovating the Education and Training Asset: multidisciplinary approach for talented students A focus on YOUNG PEOPLE Performance indicators according to EU (Bologna Process) Knowledge and understanding >> lessons Applying knowledge & understanding >> hands on session Making judgements>> discussions, project Communication skills>> presentations Learning skills>> interactions

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Alta Scuola Politecnica: innovating in teaching The Alta Scuola Politecnica (ASP) is a school for young talents, with a passion for innovation. ASP selects 150 students per year, among the applicants to the Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino (PoliTo). The official ASP language is English. Scholarship are given by the industrial partners Final project is on industry or community- driven problem ASP was established in 2004 as a joint venture of PoliMi and PoliTo. The ASP Community is made up of passionate and motivated Students coming from about 20 different countries; more than 1/3 of them are women. Innovation and knowledge are the core drivers of sustainable development. That’s why companies and public institutions are increasingly looking for talented engineers, architects and designers managing technology, but also understanding socio–economic assets and able to pursue complex innovation projects. The mission of ASP is to provide high-profile graduates combining in-depth (vertical) disciplinary knowledge from their MSc program with interdisciplinary (horizontal) skills that are needed to work and contribute leadership in a truly multidisciplinary environment.

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Innovating the Industry- University Partnership: Polimi & Eni E&P long term program of cooperation Innovation calls for innovation

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Motivation ENI’s side of the story Why the strategy to address Italian universities: Eni is looking for breakthrough or blue sky innovation (a change of mind!) Eni needs partners to work together every day. Eni needs “fresh” ideas and new approaches. Eni is looking for strong complementary competences. Eni would like to manage intellectual property. The Technological Observatory of Eni E&P @POLIMI POLIMI’s side of the story The idea is in line with the POLIMI mission standing on three points …. But it is challanging

Colombo, Valentini - POLIMI – Workshop UNCHAIN Aleppo 4/11/10 Vision A proactive and effective three years cooperation between Italian industry (ENI) and Italian university (POLIMI) to create competitive advantage for a sustainable development of Technology and Market Technology observatory ENI’s EYE@POLIMI since 2007 Mission to create a joint space for fostering breakthrough innovation focused on - scientific competences - multidisciplinary and creative approach - bilateral cooperation - individuals commitment - team building - proper coordination - inner quality control The Technological Observatory of Eni E&P @POLIMI
