First Year Intervention Learning Resources Center UMBC

What is the First Year Intervention Program? (FYI)  The First Year Intervention Program (FYI) is an early alert program designed to identify and help students in their first year at UMBC who are struggling academically.  Since its inception over 20 years ago, the FYI program has evolved to better serve the UMBC population:  Faculty now send alerts directly to first-year students, rather than submitting them to our office.  Faculty may send alerts to students who are not in their first year.

How does FYI help students?  Informing students early enough for them to take action  Providing students with information about on- campus resources to help them take action.

FYI Action Resource Center  Upon receiving an Alert, students are directed to the Action Resource Center– an online location where students are encouraged to seek help for their individual situations.  Resources include:  Academic and Pre-Professional Advising  Blackboard “Check My Activity”  Counseling Center  Instructor  Office of Residential Life  Office of Undergraduate Education  Student Support Services

FYI Action—Academic and Pre-Professional Advisement  Advising is essential for student academic success.  FYI and Advising Notes  Allows advisors to see if a student is struggling with a certain course  Helps the advisor work with the student to plan a course of action  Additional resources for transfer students

FYI Action– Office of Residential Life  Coordinator met with students receiving at least one alert in Fall 2013.  Community directors and faculty mentors met with students with two or more alerts.  Staff collected data and shared it with LRC.

FYI Action–Academic Support  The Learning Resources Center offers multiple forms of academic support  Department Tutorial/Help Centers

FYI-Fall 2013 Data  34.64% of Freshmen and Transfers received alerts (N=1283/3704 (unduplicated).  Of the 1861 alerts sent, 59% resulted in a successful outcome (Students earned an A, B, C, P, or W).

FYI—How you can help  Faculty participation is key to this program.  By sending alerts early, students have more time to seek help and improve their grades.  By sending alerts before the final drop deadline, students can withdraw from classes they may have otherwise failed.  Students are encouraged to follow up with faculty
