2 2 What you need to do Read the article on cyber-safety on slide 3 or page 92 and the activity sheet on learning styles on pages 92-94. Try out each of the seven tasks on learning styles, using the article on cyber-safety. Finally, identify THREE strategies that you will try out in future.

3 3 Cyber-safety: how to stay safe online An estimated 85% of young people have access to the internet so responsible browsing is a must. Online social networking sites such as MySpace and Bebo are popular ways to communicate with friends. Young people need to know how to use these sites safely. Top tips to stay safe online include: making sure you never give away your full name, email, home address or telephone number when you communicate with others. Use a fun nickname and avoid putting your photo online – use another image instead like a cartoon or scanned in drawing. If you feel you are being bullied online then do not respond to the messages – report the incident to an adult such a parent or teacher. You can also talk to someone about how you feel on www.there4me.com which is a private and confidentialwww.there4me.com children’s charity called the NSPCC.

4 4 Visual Learners Visual learners (using diagrams & pictures) Use colour Highlight important points in your notes. Task 1 Highlight the key features in the article on cyber safety.

5 5 Visual Learners Draw pictures: Use pictures to represent knowledge. Any image that helps you is the best type of picture – no matter how ridiculous or poorly drawn. Task 2 Draw a picture to summarise the article about cyber-safety. Try to make the drawing include as many points as possible without it becoming too complicated.

6 6 Visual Learners Place the pictures around your living space. This technique relies on your spatial memory of the location of each diagram, which in turn can be used to help you remember the contents of the diagram in the examination. Imagine placing the drawing or bullet points about cyber-safety around your bedroom: how long would it take for you to remember the key points?

7 7 Visual Learners Use spider diagrams / web diagrams Task 3 Use the text on staying safe online to design a web diagram. Some educational theorists recommend that you write the point on the line rather than away from it so it leads you visually to the next point on the diagram. Why not try it?

8 8 Auditory learners (using sound) Read and record yourself reading out notes Use a tape cassette if you have such old technology around or record on to an iPod, mobile phone, CD. Revise with a colleague If you have a friend who enjoys learning by reading notes out aloud this might make revision at school / college more fun.

9 9 Auditory learners (using sound) Task 4 With a colleague, decide who is A and who is B. A asks B to provide as many details as possible about the article on cyber-safety. B can look at the article when A is answering, but A cannot.

10 10 Auditory learners (using sound) Task 4 continued… B offers feedback on which points were not remembered. B then switches and tries to recall all the key points. How much better have you both become by working together?

11 11 Auditory learners (using sound) Use rhymes and songs to help you learn Create a rhyme or song out of the key points. Don’t sing it aloud in the examination! Task 5 Try to create a quick rhyme to remember the key points about cyber-safety.

12 12 Kinesthetic learners (being active when learning) Learn and move at the same time – method of loci Kinesthetic learners might try and walk through the bedroom and actually visit each area of the room. An example of method of loci for a shopping list might be: Bedroom door Sausages hanging from the door handle Picture on wallVisualise a jar of coffee in the picture CarpetPeas spread over carpet BedLoaf of bread used a pillow iPod speakersCovered in egg Lamp on deskBroccoli used instead of a lightbulb

13 13 Kinesthetic learners (being active when learning) Task 6 Design a method of loci for cyber-safety article. Learn and move at the same time – invent silly moves Think of physical positions that can represent knowledge. Practise on the items in the previous shopping list – as long as it works, use the method!

14 14 Kinesthetic learners (being active when learning) Task 7 Think of TWO physical moves that could represent TWO features from the article on cyber-safety.

15 15 Kinesthetic learners (being active when learning) Learn and move at the same time – listen to notes Record your notes and do something active. Listen to your notes as you jog, walk to school, college.

16 16 Learning Styles: Moving forward Identify THREE strategies that you might try out in future. 1 2 3
