2 2 Main objectives  review the substantive content of the United Nations Set of Multilaterally Agreed Equitable Principles and  experience made with its implementation, as well as to reaffirm its validity. The five-day Conference from 8 to 12 November 2011  marked the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the UN Set.  was very well attended and received high level attention,  by around 500 delegates from over 100 member States. 3 3 Three sessions were held, (a)a cluster of issues relating to the implementation of competition law and policy; (b) a cluster of issues framed in the context of a review of the experience gained in the implementation of the UN Set, including voluntary peer reviews; and (c) a cluster of issues surrounding the role of competition policy in economic development. 28.06.2011 Presentation of the Report on the 6 th UN Review Conference, 28 June 2011, morning session

5 5 The Conference  unanimously reaffirmed the validity of the UN Set, and  adopted the resolution TD/RBP/CONF.7/11. 28.06.2011 Presentation of the Report on the 6 th UN Review Conference, 28 June 2011, morning session

6 6 In its resolution the Conference decided that: (a)Future Intergovernmental Group of Experts sessions should include at least four clusters of issues: i.Appropriate design and enforcement of competition law and policy; ii.International cooperation and networking; iii.Cost-effectiveness, complementarity and collaboration in the provision of capacity-building and technical assistance to interested countries; iv.Consultations on the Model Law; 28.06.2011 Presentation of the Report on the 6 th UN Review Conference, 28 June 2011, morning session

7 7 (b) As part of such consultations, the Intergovernmental Group of Experts should undertake a comprehensive informal exchange of views and experiences; (c) Future revisions of the Model Law should be carried out in stages so as to allow adequate time for the secretariat to update the relevant chapters and for in-depth consultations among member States; 28.06.2011 Presentation of the Report on the 6 th UN Review Conference, 28 June 2011, morning session

8 8 (d) Countries wishing to be peer reviewed at UNCTAD are encouraged to give advance notice to the secretariat; (e) A rigorous application of competition policy is a very important way of guaranteeing well-functioning markets. 28.06.2011 Presentation of the Report on the 6 th UN Review Conference, 28 June 2011, morning session

10 10 Finally, it was recommended that the General Assembly convene a Seventh United Nations Conference to Review All Aspects of the Set of Multilaterally Agreed Equitable Principles and Rules for the Control of Restrictive Business Practices, to be held in Geneva, under UNCTAD auspices, in the year 2015. 28.06.2011 Presentation of the Report on the 6 th UN Review Conference, 28 June 2011, morning session
