3 As You Come In Bell Work:
Answer the following questions in complete sentences. Copy questions first. Why do we eat? Define nutrient. Define nutrition How do these words relate? How do they relate to what we eat?

4 Physical Needs Nutrients: Chemicals from food that your body uses to carry out its functions. Nutrition: the study of nutrients and how they are used by the body. Sometimes people refer to nutrition as the effects of a person’s food choices on his/her health Good nutrition then results from good food choices.

Food helps to create a bond between people. Associated with social events. Makes people feel welcome and at ease.

11 Family Relationships Helping with preparation of food and shopping can strengthen your relationship with family members. Self pride Customs and traditions- make you feel a part of a larger group of people.

Preparing food can also be enjoying. Provides creativity and challenges.

15 As You Come In Journal Describe one of your family’s favorite foods. Why is it so special? Make a list of 5 events. For each event list a food that is associated with that event.

We are members of various social groups. Many of your food choices begin with the influence of culture, family, friends, and the media.

17 Culture Culture: refers to the shared customs, traditions, and beliefs of a large group Examples: nation, race, religion Food customs- one aspect of culture. Each culture has its own way of preparing, serving, and eating foods. Examples: Mexican dish pollo con mole poblano

18 Culture, continued Because of our lifestyle we are able to try other culture’s foods Examples: Mexican, Italian, Japanese

19 Family Most likely the greatest influence on your food choices.
WE learn habits by following our family’s example. Our food customs often reflect cultural background. Sometimes we develop our own family traditions. Examples? We feel comfortable with foods that are familiar.

20 Friends Eating is a social experience.
You might learn to accept new cultural foods when you have friends that have other cultural backgrounds.

21 Media Everyday we are bombarded with messages from a multitude of information sources. Media: TV, Radio, Movies, Newspaper, Magazines, Advertisements, and Internet Advertising

Resources: Objects and qualities that can help you reach a goal Examples: time, knowledge, ability, equipment, store, and money No one has an endless supply of resources.

27 As You Come In Using magazines n your table, find pictures with your table group members of 5 different foods representing 3 different cultures. Cut these pictures out and glue to poster board on table. Identify the culture for the food on the poster. Write all four names on back of poster.
