10 Bournemouth has one of the finest stretches of coastline and sandy beaches in the South of England There are only 77 days of good surf a year in Bournemouth Surfing is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK with over 250,000 participants The British surf industry is estimated to be worth £200 million. Many Bournemouth residents feel over run by tourists in summer. This could get worse if the reef encourages tourism. The reef will be built from large sand-filled geotextile bags. The reef could double the existing wave height, reshape the waves and improve the length of the ride. Bournemouth has the third largest population of surfers in the country In 2000 Boscombe was rundown with high unemployment, crime, alcohol and vandalism Some environmentalists are concerned in case the geo-textile bags should come adrift. Some people think surfers are ‘beach bums’ who camp on the beach and do not benefit the local economy. Fishermen have objected to the plans over fears about fish stocks. The council is committed to working with local fishermen and marine ecologists The reef will protect against beach erosion Many of Boscombe’s residents are elderly and unlikely to surf. Their area will become busier and noisier. The reef is part of the Boscombe Spa Village, an £8m regeneration plan for the seafront

11 What do you think? Should Boscombe get a surf reef? Did Boscombe get its surf reef? LO: To describe why tourism is important to areas and how it can affect different groups of people
