3 Look back at the starter image, what could be the definition for the word ‘slum’?
Think: what words would we use to describe this place? Slum: These are usually illegal settlements built on the outskirts of cities or in areas that would normally not be built on (e.g. river banks, steep slopes, near rubbish dumps). The homes are made from collected materials and rubbish and put together by the people who live in them.

4 Where is Kibera? Write a description of the location of Kibera.
Things to include: Which part of Kenya it is in Which City it is part of Whereabouts in the city it is located Anything else it is near.

5 Task Read through the article on tourism in Kibera.
Read through it again and this time highlight the key bits of information that suggest why people are attracted to the slum. In partners, read and answer one question at a time using evidence from the article to support it. Highlight answers and label with correct # (next to highlighted point).

6 Article Questions How much does it cost for a tour of Kibera?
Why might the price of the tours encourage people to go on them? What does Kibera Tours promise about its profits? Why is this a good thing? What places and people would you see on a tour of Kibera? Does the article portray the negative side of living in a slum? What examples are there? In what ways is the slum itself sustainable? How is Kibera being improved? How might this help the residents?

9 Is it a good idea? Watch the Channel 4 news clip on tourism to Kibera and create a spider diagram of the disadvantages of slum tourism.

10 Assignment: Persuasive Letter
Your task is to imagine you are a slum dweller in Kibera and write a letter to ‘Kibera Tours’ arguing your opinion on whether the tourist tours should continue or not. It’s a letter – what should it look like and include?? You’re arguing your opinion – what should you include??

11 Success criteria Dear Kibera Tours, I am a resident of Kibera who is affected by the tours you run around my home. I think you should stop/continue the tourist tours. My first reason is…..As a result…. Another reason is…..This means that…. My third reason is…..Therefore….. On the other hand, I can see why you/other people think……… Yours sincerely ……. L1 – outlying the advantages or disadvantages with no development L2 – with development to explain how the impacts will effect on people in Kibera. Few opinions given. L3 – L4 plus further explanation of the social and economic impacts of the tours. As well as identify other opinions on the tours.

L1 – outlying the advantages or disadvantages with no development Swap letters with the person sitting next to you. Read through their work and assess it based on the criteria. L2 – with development to explain how the impacts will effect on people in Kibera. Few opinions given. L3 – L4 – plus further explanation of the social and economic impacts of the tours. As well as identify other opinions on the tours.
