The Exercise Session (2) Goal Setting

Starter – Review of ‘The Exercise Session’ Find a partner, 3 reasons each why you warm up for a sporting activity Find a NEW partner! 3 important things each included in the main activity Find ANOTHER NEW partner! 3 main points each about why you cool down

Today Goal setting SMART Principles Why? Now you know about the exercise session, you need to know what goals you want to achieve before planning your PEP To do this you need to know about the SMART principle, and the short and long term goals for both your sport and your PEP

Why set Goals? Goal setting is extremely important to a performer Setting out staged and achievable goals can keep a performer motivated As a performer, knowing what you have to do at each stage can give you an element of control and can help to reduce boredom Goals can help a performer work hard and keep focused on a task

What are Goals? Goals can be set in every session or a training programme (like your PEP) Short term goals – every session Long term goals – training programme (PEP)

Short Term Goals Short-term goals are often set in training programmes e.g. for one session or one week Act as incentives to train hard in order to reach targets quickly They can also indicate if the performer is on target for success

Example of an Athlete STG1. Train hard to achieve a good distance which qualifies them for an event STG2. Win that event STG3. Through that be selected for the county team STG4. Train to be selected to represent the county in a competition

Long Term Goals Long-term goals are often the culmination of several training programmes Can possibly lead to a competition or final event in a season Could be an athletes long term goal to represent GB in 2012

There are two types of sporting goals… 1.Outcome Goals – Linked to results of performance in competition 2.Performance Goals – Concerned with previous performances, such as being good enough to run for the country or to be selected for the Olympics

Task One 1.What are your short- and long-term goals for your main sport? 2.Do you think they are realistic? 3.In pairs, discuss your goals.

Goal setting should be… Specific MeasurableAchievable Realistic Time- bound SMART

Task Two 1.Set out specific short- and long-term goals for your main sport, making sure they are SMART. 2.Do these goals differ from the ones you set earlier? Discuss this in pairs.

Example Exam Questions 1.Think of a high performance athlete and give a suitable sporting example of a short-term goal they may have 2.Explain the best way to plan your goals in sport 3.Why is this the best way to plan your goals?

Goal Setting Your PEP Set out some short and long term goals for your PEP You may only have one long term goal Use SMART to state what you wish to achieve by the end of the 6 week training programme

Planning Your PEP – Week One For the MAIN ACTIVITY… Think of 8 to 15 stations on a circuit How long are you going to spend on each station? How much rest are you going to have in between each one? When are you going to measure your heart rate?

Warm Up and Cool Down How are you going to warm up? How long will your warm up last? When will your body be ready for the main activity? How do you know when your body is ready?

Planning Your PEP Do the same for five more weeks Show progression across the six weeks Use FITT and SPIR
