2 Peter Paul Rubens Born on June 28, 1577 Died on May 30, 1640 Born in Siegen, Germany His Father was Jan Rubens, who was a Calvinist, and his mother was Maria Pypelinks. His family was protestant, and Siegen was against protestant so they went to Cologne. He was always interested in Art and literature throughout his whole life, as he studied and was taught by many famous painters. Peter Paul Rubens

3 Peter Paul Rubens: Early Life About ten years after Peter was born, his family had moved back to where they were from which was Cologne. About a year later, Peter’s dad died and him and his mother moved to Antwerp. He was raised to be a Christian and was one of the leading voices of the Catholic Counter- Reformation style of painting. He received a humanist education studying literature early in his life. Peter Paul Rubens

4 Traveling to Italy Peter went on an expedition to Italy traveling to different cities, gaining experience. First, he stopped in Venice, then went to Mantua where he had settled down. These travels had a huge affect on Rubens. Many of the artist he met such as Titian had a great impact on his style of painting. In Italy, he mainly studied Greek and Roman art. 5 Famous Works: Venus and Adonis This piece of art does a great job at showing what art was like during the Renaissance Period. This figure look idealized and perfect and their bodies look like they are moving. Mostly nude and their faces are showing emotion. This work involves nature as it looks very realistic and the background in this work is very full and detailed. Venus And Adonis

6 William Shakespeare He was baptized on April 26, 1564, in Stratford-upon- Avon, England No birth records exist, is believed he was born on or near April 23, 1564 He was educated at the King’s School He was married to Anne Hathaway on November 28, 1582 They had twins together Shakespeare

7 He began as a actor and playwright in London in 1592 By 1597, 15 of his 37 plays had been published His early plays used metaphors and were mainly histories such as Richard II Some of his most famous works include Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Othello and The Merchant of Venice

8 He died on April 23, 1615 In his will, he left most of his belongings to his eldest daughter, Susanna He is often considered the greatest dramatist of all time Shakespeare and the Renaissance He went along with the Renaissance by focusing on mainly human characters such as in Hamlet He used his knowledge of Greek and Roman classics to help him write He began to disregard social structure and focus on his characters themselves He also focused on individuality

9 One of his most famous works to this day is the Merchant of Venice It was written between 1596 and 1598 It is a romantic comedy It was first performed in 1605 It centers around a man who borrows money and cannot pay it back It also centers around self interest versus love
