Compare/Contrast Paper: Rough Draft Introduction Paragraph Sentence 1: Hook (quote, question, fact, or vivid description) Sentences 2, 3,4, 5 & 6: Plot summary (summarize the Perseus myth) – NOT the movie version Sentence 7: Thesis Statement (what your paper is about)

In 1946, director David Lean made a movie version of Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations. Both the book and the movie are set in England. The novel tells the story of a young apprentice named Pip. A mysterious and unnamed supporter gives Pip money so he can become a gentleman in London. He lives with a rich old lady, receives a large sum of money for an annual allowance, and is popular among the rich. Then he finds out who his real supporter is and it is a shock. The book and movie are similar in characters, some settings, story, and ending, however, the movie is different from the book in the following ways: some characters are left out, some settings are added, the story is told in dialogue, and some of the ending is changed.

Paragraph 2: Compare/Contrast Characters Sentence 1: topic sentence with transition How are characters ALIKE and DIFFERENT? Sentence 2: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how characters are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 3: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how CHARACTERS are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 4: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how characters are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 5: Conclusion (summarizes ENTIRE paragraph about characters)

Paragraph 3: Compare/Contrast Settings Sentence 1: topic sentence with transition How are settings ALIKE & DIFFERENT? Sentence 2: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how settings are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 3: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how settings are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 4: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how settings are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 5: Conclusion (summarizes paragraph 3)

On the other hand, some settings from the novel Great Expectations are left out of the movie, while some settings in the movie look exactly like the ones described in the book. The main setting of Victorian England looks romantic, yet also dreary for a young, poor Pip. As opposed to the book version though, several settings are added to the movie version such as Bramgate Prison, the town of Barnard, and the Jolly Bargeman pub. While the book begins in Pip’s hometown of Kent, the movie leaves out this setting and begins on a deserted road from Kent to London. All in all, the change in settings from book to movie, the additional locations, and the unchanged main setting do not change the main idea of the book.

Paragraph 4: Compare/Contrast Plot Sentence 1: topic sentence with transition How are plots ALIKE & DIFFERENT? Sentence 2: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how plots are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 3: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how plots are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 4: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how plots are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 5: Conclusion (summarizes paragraph 4)

Paragraph 5: Compare/Contrast Resolution (endings) Sentence 1: topic sentence with transition How are ending ALIKE & DIFFERENT? Sentence 2: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how endings are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 3: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how endings are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 4: Detail (proof) from book & movie of how endings are ALIKE & DIFFERENT Sentence 5: Conclusion (summarizes paragraph 5)

Paragraph 6: Conclusion Sentence 1: restate thesis statement MUST use different words from 1 st paragraph Sentences 2 & 3: Summarizes how characters, settings, plot, & resolution are ALIKE Sentences 4 & 5: Summarizes how characters, settings, plot, & resolution are DIFFERENT Sentence 6: State whether you liked story or movie best and why Sentence 7: State which one you recommend – book or movie – and why

Although the characters, settings, plot, and resolution in the book Great Expectations are similar to the movie, these same story elements are somewhat changed in the movie, which makes the movie seem better. The main characters of Pip and Estella stay the same, Pip still finds out the name of his benefactor, and the story still takes place in Victorian England in both the novel and the movie. In contrast, Estella never marries and characters are added, the ending between Pip and Estella is different, and locations in England are also added in the movie version. In my opinion, the movie version is much better than the original novel because even though I enjoyed reading the novel, the plot in the movie was easy to understand, and the characters didn’t act as mean or snobby compared to the book. I would recommend seeing the movie version rather than reading the book because the movie covers the main plot and characters while doing it in a picturesque way that is Enjoyable and easier to understand.
