3. What counts as MSW in South Carolina? Combined residential, commercial, institutional/non-profit and industrial packaging generated. This does not include industrial process waste and by-products from manufacturing, C&D debris, automobile bodies, agricultural waste, combustion ash, mining waste and sewage sludge.

4. Recycling at a glance… The state’s MSW recycling rate improved to 29.5 percent in FY12 from 27.7 percent the previous FY.

8. Electronics Ban became effective at beginning of FY12. Electronics recycling jumped from 5,726 tons in FY11 to 9,258 tons in FY12 – about a 62 percent increase.

9. Used Motor Oil Recycling More than 900 used oil collection centers. 932,725 gallons (3,265 tons) collected in FY12. Since 1990, more than 18.3 million gallons recycled by DIYers.

10. Commingled Collection In FY12, 81,810 tons of commingled material was recycled–72 percent increase from previous fiscal year. This accounts for 6.7 percent of all MSW recycled.

15. Total Solid Waste (TSW) Total amount generated increased from 12.7 million tons in FY11 to 13 million tons in FY12. TSW disposal fell from 9.3 p/p/d to 9.0 p/p/d. Amount recycled increased 8 percent to 5.3 million tons.

19. Recycling’s Economic Impact In 2012, 19 new or existing companies made $463 million in capital investments and created 770 jobs. Overall in S.C., the recycling industry is comprised of 450 companies that provide about 20,000 jobs.
