8 8 University Programs Special Considerations Principal Investigator (PI) is required to be a U.S. Citizen All personnel working under the contract are required to be a U.S. person –a U.S. Citizen –a lawful permanent resident alien of the US, (a "Green Card" holder) Public Release Information –All materials to be published or presented in a public forum must be cleared by MDA –All materials considered for public release must be submitted to the Contracting Officer 90 days in advance DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A Approved for Public Release: 09-MDA-5041 (2 DEC 09)

9 9 SBIR/STTR Programs SBIR – Small Business Innovation Research –Funds early-stage R&D projects at small technology companies –Phase I is typically a period of performance of 6 – 9 months –Phase I funding is typically in the range of $70 – $100k –Phase II is a 2yr award of $500 – $750k by invitation only after a successful Phase I STTR – Small Business Technology Transfer Program –Funds cooperative R&D projects involving a small business and a research institution (i.e., University, Federally-funded R&D Center (FFRDC), or nonprofit research institution). –Phase I is typically a period of performance of 6 – 9 months –Phase I funding is typically $100k –Phase II is a 2yr award of $500 – $750k by invitation only after a successful Phase I –Minimum of 30 percent of the work must be done by the Research Institution –Minimum of 40 percent of the work must be done by the Small Business DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A. 10 10 The MDA SBIR/STTR Focus MDA MISSION “Develop and field an integrated BMDS capable of providing a layered defense for the homeland, deployed forces, friends, and allies against ballistic missiles of all ranges in all phases of flight.” MDA uses SBIR/STTR to pursue high-risk technologies that could spur a revolutionary leap or enhancement, decrease the time required to transform them into actual applications for insertion into the BMDS, and benefit from commercialization. www.winmda.com www.dodsbir.net DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A Approved for Public Release: 09-MDA-5041 (2 DEC 09)

11 11 SBIR Industrial Partnership Days Benefit:  Leveraged IR&D (Internal Research & Development) funds through the prime contractor  Business relationships between the prime and sub-tier contractors, and  Mentor/protégé relationships essential for fledgling small business Purpose: To encourage the transition of DV-sponsored SBIR/STTR-funded technology into the BMDS through industrial partnership with prime contractors. Description/Approach: Work with Prime Contractors to gather stakeholder audience at their site to hear SBIR briefers.  SBIR/STTR projects identified by the prime.  MDA stakeholders and TMs invited  Models for meetings regarding size, technology, and stage of development vary based on Prime’s needs  MDA follow-up with large/small business is essential DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A. 12 12 ESSO ESSO – Engineer and Scientist Student Outreach Inspire students to become engineers & scientists immediately prior to their selection of High School curriculum –Motivate next generation in time to guide college preparation –Focus on 8th grade students after standardized test preparation (early April) and before selection of 9th grade course work (May) Emphasize applied mathematics –Students predict and verify a physics problem in teams –Demonstrate that math helps us understand our world –Accent experimentation and discovery Show how engineers “create the future world we will live in” Involve teachers and ultimately parents Measure progress by tracking the interests of students for 10yrs following the course DISTRIBUTION STATEMENT A.
