6 The DoD STTR program, funded at approximately $132 million in FY 2008 is made up of: Air Force Army Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Missile Defense Agency (MDA) Navy Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD) Six Participating Components

8 To create an effective vehicle for moving ideas from our nation’s research institutions to the market, where they can benefit both private sector and military customers. Purpose of STTR

9 Cooperative R&D projects involving a small business and a research institution University Non-profit Research Institution Federally-Funded R&D (FFRD) STTR Funds

10 The Participants Firm: U.S. for-profit small business of 500 or fewer employees. Research institution: no size limit. Research institution: U.S. college or university or non-profit research institution, FFR&D. Participate in STTR Program:

11 The Work Must be performed in the United States. Small business must perform a minimum of 40% of the work. Research institution a minimum of 30% of the work in both Phase I and Phase II. Participate in STTR Program:

12 The Structure and Operation The small business must manage and control the STTR funding agreement. The principal investigator may be employed at the small business or research institution. Participate in STTR Program:
