1 Welcome to Back to School Night at Luxmanor E.S. 3 rd Grade Mrs. Jackie Bailey, Mrs. Julie Corrado, and Ms. Mary Droggitis Mrs. Corrado’s Substitute: Mrs. Scherr

2 Math Math block – 1 hour and 15 minutes daily Quarter 1 Topics –Understand place value to round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. –Delve deep into the operations for addition and subtraction –Add and subtract fluently –Build a repertoire of strategies for learning multiplication and division facts Based on student understanding, classes may be regrouped for appropriate instruction (enrichment or reteach) for short periods of time

3 Math Measurement Topics Operations and Basic Algebraic Thinking Number and Operations in Base Ten Number and Operations – Fractions Measurement and Data Geometry

4 Writing Narrative, informative, and opinion texts Weeks 1–3: connect social studies content to writing by developing a narrative about how they contributed to the common good. Weeks 4–9: use descriptive techniques to develop an extended writing piece that includes informative and opinion writing –How do people work together to develop a thriving community? Students share their audio/visual display to culminate their research

6 Words Their Way Spelling program designed to meet the individual needs of students Grouped based on spelling inventory 2 week rotation for word lists Daily in-class practice and opportunities for practice at home Bi-weekly quizzes VOLUNTEERS NEEDED- Thursday 11:05- 11:45

7 Reading Reading block - 1 hour and 15 minutes Mix of whole group and guided reading instruction Instructional Focus for MP1: –Explore themes found in literature and how characters behave in texts –Characteristics of realistic fiction and the character’s influence on the sequence of events –Make inferences and predictions to identify a personal point of view –Read and analyze informational text –Explain how text, online features, and search tools clarify information

16 Snacks We will have a HEALTHY snack that should be brought from home daily. NUT FREE (please do not send peanut butter or any tree nuts). Snacks are not to be shared between students for health reasons.

17 Birthdays Please let the teacher know by email in advance if you would like to bring in a special treat for your child’s birthday Please leave the treats in the office in the morning of their birthday. MCPS guidelines state that snacks need to be store-bought, not homemade. School policy states that private party invitations should not be distributed at school
