SMART Formula

 Peter Drucker is reputed to have said that  "Objectives are not fate; they are direction.  They are not commands; they are commitments.  They do not determine the future; they are means to mobilize the resources and energies of the business for the making of the future". Goals

 If not how can you improve - prepare more, improve your resource base, communicate more effectively, or understand more clearly what your customers want and how you intend to deliver their requirements? So have you set the right objectives?

 Setting goals – important part of being successful  Where are you headed?  How do you know if you are succeeding?  How do you prioritize daily tasks?  How do you feel a sense of accomplishment Introduction

  Make our jobs easier  Make our jobs more manageable  Give us a clear vision of where we’re headed  Tell us how we are going to get there Goals

  Use technical skills on the job  Accomplish during this semester Co-op Objectives

  SMART Formula  Specific  Measurable  Agreed upon  Realistic  Time-bound Co-op Objectives

  S = Specific. Be detailed. Write down what you really want to do. Specific. The goal must tell exactly what will be accomplished. For example: By October 1, I will develop a procedure checklist for performing maintenance on the company vehicle. Specific

  By October 1, 2012, I will inventory my tools and make a list of additional tools needed and a list of needed repairs on my tools.  By October 1, 2012, I will have created and tested a new recipe for the lunch menu. Specific

  M = Measurable. This can be in stages but you need to know when you've arrived – an end point. Measurable. A measurable criteria helps you determine if the goal has been completed. This can be stated as a number (5 ideas, 10% gain, one decision) or as an achievement (Did I write a document or not?). Measurable

  A = Agreed Upon. To be successful at work you must be accomplishing what your supervisor wants you to accomplish. Achievable. Goals must be agreed upon in order for the resources and time to be made available. Agreed Upon

  R = Realistic. Can this be achieved with available resources including time, materials, money, expertise? Realistic

  T = Time. Don’t be vague. Set a deadline – some specific date between now and the end of the semester. Time-bound

  Setting SMART goals helps you know  where you’re going  where to focus your energy  when you’ve completed the task Summary
