1 Balanced Assessment in Mathematics (BAM) (Criterion-referenced)
(published by CTB)

2 Report Types Norm-referenced Student scores are compared with
a “normal” group of students at a grade level. Criterion-referenced Students scores are compared with the achievement of specific goals or standards.

3 One Norm- and Five Criterion-Referenced Assessments
Norm-Referenced Terra Nova Criterion-Referenced DoDEA Writing Assessment (DoDEA) Performance Assessment: Communication Arts (CTB) Balance Assessment in Math (CTB) Gr. 3 Reading Proficiency Test (Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) or Terra Nova) Algebra I End-of-Course Assessment (ETS)

4 Balanced Assessment in Mathematics (BAM)
Grades 4 and 8 Full Implementation began in Spring 2002 Establish Baselines for DoDEA 2002 Scored by Teachers at annual Spring (May) Conference

5 Testing Windows February and/or March April May Terra Nova (Gr. 2-11)
Communication Arts (Gr. 4, 8 & 10) Balance Assessment in Math (Gr. 4, & 8) Reading Proficiency Test (Gr. 3) May End of Course Assessments: Algebra I (Only students in Algebra I classes) U.S. History Biology

6 Directions for Administration
Read the Directions for Administration booklet prior to administering the test. Requirements: Materials: test book, pencil, calculator Teacher tasks: Read script. Begin test. Time test. Collect test booklets.

7 Timing the Test Approximately 40 minutes
Give more time for students who need it School schedule determines time allotted tell students at the beginning of the test Collect booklets from students who have finished at 40 minutes Write number of minutes worked on back cover of test book for students who work longer than 40 minutes

8 Sample Question and Scoring

9 Sample Question (Sixth Grade)
At a sports center, everyone takes part in one of five different sports. This table shows percentage of people who played badminton, basketball and squash on Monday. Monday Badminton 10% Basketball 40% Squash 5% Swimming ? Tennis ? Badminton jj jj

10 Four Questions (Total Points = 5)
On the circle graph label the two sections that represent basketball and squash. Badminton has been labeled for you. (1 point for correct labels) On Monday more people went swimming than played tennis. On the circle graph label the sections for swimming and tennis. (1 point for two correct labels)

11 Four Questions (continued)
Use the circle graph to estimate the percentage of people who went swimming. Explain how you figured it out. (1 point for acceptable explanation based on comparison) Use the circle graph to estimate the percentage of people who played tennis. Show how you figured it out. (1 point for correct estimate & 1 point if total of %s in #3 & #4 is correct)

12 Annual Map Compare BAM to NCTM
New test each year. Document critical to interpreting results. Not all standards covered each year, only a sample. Complete mathematics domain covered over time. Refer to back of handout for sample.
