Tapping into TI-Navigator Activities Kymn Van Dyken Aspen Valley High School kymn.vandyken@asd20.org http://mrsvandyken.pbwiki.com/ kymn.vandyken@asd20.org http://mrsvandyken.pbwiki.com/ "Mathematics is the Queen of the Sciences." - Carl Friedrich Gauss

What can happen on a 3 year journey 1.A few calculators to check out 2. One school wide projector with a fuzzy screen 3.Huh, what is TI-Navigator 4.How can we write a grant 5.Mismatch in grade level standards and a shortage of math classes 1.TI-84 Silver Plus’s for all math students 2.Ceiling mounted projectors in the entire school 3.3 dedicated TI-Navigators in our building 4.3 grants and the only school in CO to attend the Microsoft Innovative Teachers Forum in 2007 5.Beginning to realign our math program

Why use TI-Navigator? Gets everyone involved Provides real-time feedback The technology appeals to the students Great for visual learners Formative assessments Electronic portfolios

Real Data in Real Time 1.Perfect for using data in the classroom as formative assessments. The immediate feedback allows teachers to adjust teaching 2. Data from the world around us helps students connect with our teaching

How to Log in on the student calculators Press the  key Arrow down  to Navnet Press  Press  again

Using Learn Check in the class Learn checks can be used as formative and summative assessments. Make great lesson warm ups Templates can be used to collect homework. Use the class analysis feature for results Sample Quiz http://www.quizrocket.com/dumb-test/

How to Open Sample Quiz Back Network apps Learncheck Take sample quiz

Class Analysis Feature Show the results of a learn check by showing a PowerPoint type of presentation with the Question Answer An spreadsheet of answers for the teacher Class analysis icon

How to use the quick poll As the teacher, Click on the quick poll feature Questions can be typed in or created ahead of time Great for formative assessments Quick poll responses include: True/False Yes/No Right/Wrong Multiple Choice Open Response

View of Quick Poll and Options

Fastest Finger Shared at T 3 in Dallas Great for basic facts, multiple choice problems, and homework +5 Being the first person and right +3 (if the 1 st person is not correct, and right answer) +1 Correct answer at any time 0 Wrong answer -5 For being the first person and wrong! The point is that it is more important to be right than to be fast

Quick Poll On a scale from 0 to 1000, how important is access to the internet to you?

Examples of internet responses Sample of the Quick Poll Summary Each student rated the importance of the internet on a scale between 0 and 1000

Activity Center Notes and Ideas 1. Graphing Activity from Patrick Sanchez 2. Try graphing points from verbal directions 3. Graph lines with the slope and y-intercept y = 1/3x - 2 4. Graph inequalities such as y ≤ 2x + 1 Activity from Robert Lochel

Uses for the Activity Center Students contribute points, lines, or data. Students can fill out forms. Activity settings can be prepared in advance. Collected data can be disseminated back to students.

Material for the Census at School example “Census At School is a non-profit project funded by organizations interested in promoting good use of statistics and data handling.” Students can participate and use their own data for math classes. Phase 8 Secondary Survey http://www.censusatschool.ntu.ac.uk/default.asp http://www.censusatschool.ntu.ac.uk/default.asp

Activity Center The same data from quick poll can be collected in the activity center and disseminated back out to the class via a list (existing activity lists). 0 means “not at all” and 1000 means “very important”.

Lists in Activity Center Collecting Data Open Activity Center Click contribute > lists> configure Choose L1 > click ok Check the lists from calculator box Start the activity and have students send list by pressing zoom Returning List Configure again Send existing lists back to each calculator

Screen Capture The screen capture feature can take a snapshot of the class at any one time. The shot can be saved as a jpeg. “Every lessons uses Navigator”

This is the same data collected and returned to the class

Data can also be collected on forms Start by choosing the form option

Forms are easy to set up Input the name and the list that you want it sent to:

Importing large lists into Navigator Copy a list in Excel Paste it into TI-Interactive Export to computer and save as a list to the desktop Open Navigator Go to load > load lists> browse for the list

Sources for data for TI-Navigator examples Consider RSS Feeds SS Really Simple Syndications Used for frequently updated info Good for news! Also for updated statistics Think of filtered updates You need an aggregator or feed reader to read these Can be web-based or on the desktop-based

Sign into Google created account

After signing in… 1.Click on my account 2. Click on reader

Example of my Google Reader These are some of my feeds You can personalize your preferences

Click on RSS link and paste the URL into the reader

http://landmark-project.com/ For data on: Environment Census economics sports

http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/ Population clocks http://www.census.gov/population/www/popclockus.html http://www.census.gov/popest/archives/1990s/popclockest.txt

What is the connection to TI-Navigator Students learn how to “navigate” large pieces of data This link gives directions for turning data into excel lists http://landmark-project.com/d3.php

TI-Website Does not currently have RSS feeds
