1 Barriers Facing International Geoscientists to AAPG Membership (1977-2002)

2 1977 Member : I think that we should go international. Official: There are no geologists outside America.

4 32 Recommendations made in 1997/8 Report Issues where actions were taken: Services (6) Bylaws and Administration (5) Dues and funding (3) Access to AAPG-Sponsors etc (3)

5 Sponsoring Actions taken: None possible to date due to objections from current members.

6 Sponsoring Potential solutions: 1. Add other classes of sponsors. 2. Corresponding Members. 3. Life Memberships. 4. Corporate Memberships. 5. Explorer only subscriptions. 6. Abstracts only subscriptions.

7 Dues and Funding Actions taken: 1. No new special rates introduced. 2. GEMs & 1 st Ladies Initiative. 3. Members mentoring, paying dues etc. 4. More funds in Grants-in-Aid program. 5. None on Group Memberships.

8 Dues and Funding Potential Solutions: 1. Expansion of existing initiatives. 2. Encourage employer support. 3. Corporate sponsors for Grants-in-Aid. 4. New membership formats. 5. Include dues etc as education in E&P contracts.

9 Bylaws and Administration Actions taken: 1. Regions started. 2. Bylaws changed. 3. Regions now have reps. on AAPG Exec. and other admin. committees. 4. Have International rep. in Tulsa.

10 Bylaws and Administration Potential Solutions: 1. Allow delegates, unable to get to meetings, access to HOD voting and decision-making activities. 2. E-mail voting. 3. Address emerging issues.

11 Progress and results Increased international membership. More Affiliated Societies in place. More Student Chapters established. More Distinguished Lecturers in place. More overseas courses distributed. More overseas visits made. More international meetings.

12 Some Outstanding Issues Slow approval process. Poor mail delivery. Uneven Tulsa – International links. Only ~ 25/~230 countries have enough members to grow internally. AAPG weak in Arab world & some producing nations. Need:- Mentors,VGP,EDM,& Env.Geos.
