11 28.2 JFK and the Cold War The New Frontier: JFK’s Domestic and Foreign programs. Kennedy wanted to: 1. Eradicate poverty 2. Work towards Civil Rights for African Americans 3. Explore space 4. Defeat Communism Many Republicans and Southern Democrats in Congress denied JFK’s domestic social reform attempts. He focused most of his Presidency on Foreign Affairs.

CIA led operation = full scale Cuban invasion. Cuban exiles (over 1,400) April, 1961. 114 killed, rest taken prisoner. Embarrassment for US & Kennedy.

15 Cuban Missile Crisis October, 1962 Khrushchev sent nuclear missiles to Cuba. 13 Day Ordeal: 1. Oct.14, 1962: Surveillance photos show Soviets construction missile sites in Cuba. 2. Oct. 22: JFK announces blockade of Cuba (U.S. forces would fire on any ship that attempted to pass the blockade) 3. Oct. 24: Soviet ships approach blockade 4. Oct. 28: Agreement made.
