2 July 2013 LCCU Meeting System Restore, Files Changed –Vista: “System Restore restores Windows system files, programs, and registry settings. It can also make changes to scripts, batch files, and other types of executable files” Added for Win 7: “created under any user account on your computer. 3 July 2013 LCCU Meeting System Restore, Files Changed –Some of the files and settings saved in a Windows XP restore point: Registry (Contains Configuration information for application, user, and operating system settings) Windows File Protection files in the dllscache folder. 4 July 2013 LCCU Meeting System Restore In Windows XP –Takes snapshots of system files, some program files and of registry settings, also scripts, batch files and executable files, & stores them in restore points. In Windows Vista & 7 –The System Protection service creates restore points at regular intervals as it monitors system settings and previous versions of files, including user files, on a disc drive.

5 July 2013 LCCU Meeting System Restore Windows XP –To control: Control Panel, System, System Restore tab, Settings, then slider controls % of disc used or check to disable. –To use: Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore, next, choose date of restore point, next. Windows Vista & 7 –To control: Control Panel, System, System Protection tab, check or clear box next to each drive. In Win 7, you can specify % of drive space to use and whether to include system settings or only previous versions of files. –To use: same as for XP or from Control Panel as above.

6 July 2013 LCCU Meeting File Restore Options Windows Vista Home and XP Home: – restore files from Windows Backup. –Vista Home - restore prior version using 3 rd party software. Windows XP Pro, Vista Business, Enterprise & Ultimate and all versions of Windows 7: –restore files from Windows Backup. –restore Prior Version using Windows Explorer (except XP). –restore from a system image, mounted as a Virtual HD. Windows 8 – restore from file history or using Windows 7 options.

7 July 2013 LCCU Meeting Restoring Files – Win XP Windows Backup must have been run before losing the file. run Backup & Restore Wizard, (Accessories, System Tools, Backup) –select “Restore files and settings”, click next, select.bkf backup file for desired date and expand (dbl-click) to select files or folders, click next. –Click Advanced to restore to an alternate location, to select whether to leave or replace existing files, etc. –Click Finish to restore.

Click Start, Control panel, System and Maintenance, Backup and Restore, –Click “Restore my files” or “Restore all users’ files” –Select date of file to restore from. –Click “Browse for files”, ”Browse for folders” or “Search” to select items, click Add. –Decide location to restore to and click “Start restore” button.

9 July 2013 LCCU Meeting Recovering Files, Prior Versions In Windows Vista & 7, shadow copies of changed files, including your documents, are created by System Restore and by Windows File Backup using the “Volume Shadow Copy Service”. A shadow copy contains the pre-change 16K blocks of a changed file. In Vista, restore points are created daily; in Win 7, they’re created every 7 days. Default maximum space for shadow copies is 15% on Vista and 5% on Win 7. Oldest files are deleted to make room for new ones.

10 July 2013 LCCU Meeting Recovering Files, Prior Versions For Vista Business, Enterprise & Ultimate, all versions of 7, –Either Windows File Backup must have been run or restore points must have been turned on, (i.e. under Control Panel, System, System Protection tab, Automatic restore points, disc volumes are checked) to create shadow copies of changed files. –to restore previous version of a file, right-click file name, click Properties and Previous Versions tab. For Vista Home, –get & install Shadow Explorer utility from www.shadowexplorer.com or other site first. Try to avoid unwanted toolbars. Portable version works. www.shadowexplorer.comother site first

11 July 2013 LCCU Meeting Recovering Files, Prior Versions Using Shadow Explorer –Download, and extract or install & Shadow Explorer utility from www.shadowexplorer.com or Snapfiles site.www.shadowexplorer.comSnapfiles site –Run Shadow Explorer. –Next to C:, choose date to restore to. –User files are under Users, nothing shows under Documents and Settings folder. Navigate to files needed, select and restore. –For deleted files, navigate to folder they were in.

Browse to the.vhd file in the backup folder named SystemImageBackup, subfolder with your username. If there are two.vhd files, it’s the larger. A new drive should show up using the next available letter. –Autoplay will show up. Browse and copy needed files. –When done, go back to Disk Management, right-click drive for vhd and click “detach”.
