Reason for choosing the topic Telecommunication engineering being the most expanding technological sector in Bangladesh since 2000, is also one of the major employers of electrical and electronic engineers of the country. Such a workshop would help the participants keep track of the cutting edge technologies and burning issues as well as enable them to interact with professionals and help them get a practical view of the field. This expands their career prospects too. IEEE Bangladesh Section

Theme The theme of the workshop to focus on the use and evolution of communication systems in various engineering fields. The fields are: Power systems in Bangladesh Bangladesh Railway Cellular Mobile Communication Optical Communication Systems IEEE Bangladesh Section

Use of Telecommunication in Power System Operation and Management Speaker: Muhammad Elias, Deputy General Manager, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh In the first lecture, Mr. Elias focused on use of different communication modes to acquire data from remote locations in the power systems. He discussed the role of Power Line Carrier (PLC), microwave link, DVFTN, VHF link for SCADA systems. Finally he shed light on recent NLDC project, which is going to use optical fiber as backbone communication link. IEEE Bangladesh Section

Railway Signal & Telecommunication System Speaker: Khandker Shahidul Islam, Additional Chief Engineer, Signal & Telecom, Bangladesh Railway In the second lecture, Mr. Islam described impact of the optical fiber backbone network belonging to Bangladesh Railway, on the ICT revolution in Bangladesh. He discussed how the impediments for implementing such a cutting edge technology was overcome in the 1980s and how the huge financial deficits were met up by leasing the backbone to commercial vendors. 10 Wavelength Division Multiplexing Optical Transmission Systems: Present Scenario & Future Prospects Speaker: Prof. Dr. Satya Prasad Majumder, Dept. of EEE, BUET Prof Majumder discussed basic principles of wavelength division multiplexing as used in optical transmission systems. His lecture also included OFDM schemes, OCDMA, optical amplifiers, fiber access networks, optical cross connects, OTDM. He elucidated the fiber submarine links and impact of Bangladeshs proposed linkage with the IT superhighway through SEA-ME-WE-4 submarine cable. Finally he described the current research aspect on WDM. IEEE Bangladesh Section

Latest Development in Mobile Technology Speaker: Ahmed El Noamany, Manager, VAS Engineering & Development,Banglalink Ltd. In the final lecture, Mr. Noamany enchanted the audience by his lucid presentation on recent developments in Cellular Mobile Communication. He described the basic concepts of IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), Push to Talk (PTT) and BlackBerry. For each case he described the system architectures, end user experience and major limitations.
