① Make a team of two and two teams will be in a same group. Make 4 groups in total. 2

There are four sticky buns, which are different in size and color. 3

② Let’s separate those four sticky buns into two groups by a straight line! How do you separate them into two? How many solutions can you find? 4

Let’s find the solution with two teams together for 2 minutes! Move each sticky bun while thinking of the ways and find how to separate them into two. 5

How did you separate them into two? 6

2 3 1 Solution 1) red and white by color Solution 2) large and small by size Solution 3) a pair of large and small by combination 7

Do you see that a standard of separation can be color, size, and combination? 8

Let’s play Separating “sticky buns” Game next based on mathematical thinking skills. 9

Rule 1. Find as many solutions as you can, separating the given sticky buns into two by a straight line based on a standard. 10

2. Let’s find ways of separation. 1 2 Solution 1) red and white by color Solution 2) large and small by size 11

3.Two teams in a group show each other how to separate sticky buns. They are separated by color. Correct! 12

4. If a player team finds all the solutions that a creator team prepared, the player team will get 1 point! The Creator team’s division The Player team’s division 13

5. If a player team finds any solution that a creator team has never found, the player team will get 2 points for each solution. 14

6. If a creator team can create a game with more than four solutions, the creator team can get 1 additional point. If a player team can find all the solutions to the game, the player can get 1 point as well. 15

7. The team who gets the most points will win. Let’s create a game and a solution, and compete each other. 16

Now, add two large red sticky buns and two small white sticky buns. 17

Let’s arrange those 8 sticky buns so that there are as many solutions as possible. 大小 赤 21 白 23 18

③ Let’s create a game with a partner of the same team for 10 minutes. Note all the solutions. Ten minutes later, one team shows the game to another team. 19

Have you finished? Let’s share the game with each other! 20

④ Decide which team will be the first by scissors-paper-stone. The first team shows their game and the second team plays it. 21

⑤ The first team puts all the sticky buns on the floor as they think for one minute. The second team waits, counting down until it is done without looking at the first team. 22

⑥ The second team finds solution and spends 2 minutes showing the first team how to arrange the sticky buns. If the solution shown by the second team is correct, then the first team calls “Correct!” 23

Can you find all the solutions? How many points did you get? 24

Now, let’s start the next round. The second team puts all the sticky buns on the floor as they thought for one minute. The first team waits, counting down until it is done, without looking at the second team. 25

The first team finds solution and spends 2 minutes showing the first team how to arrange the sticky buns. If the solution shown by the first team is correct, then the second team calls “Correct!” 26

Can you find all the solutions? How many points did you get? 27

Let’s announce the result! 28

Did you see there are several ways to separate sticky buns into two, changing a standard, such as color, size, and combination? I hope you enjoyed playing the game as well as learning one of mathematical thinking skills, so called categorization skills. 29

Lecture about game creation. You can make a game if you decide a rule, a condition to win, and a question. It doesn’t matter if you use paper or a digital device. 30

In this workshop, you created a question of the game. 31

The purpose of the cake division game Understand several viewpoints about how to separate sticky buns into two groups. Nurture fundamental thinking skills for shape categorization in math. 32 For example, if you want to categorize triangles, you can separate them by length of sides, or by angles. If you separate triangles by sides, there are isosceles triangles, which have two same length sides, equilateral triangles in which all the sides are equal, and others. If you separate triangles by angles, there are acute triangles, right triangles, and obtuse triangles.

PROCEDURE SAMPLE 33

Procedure of the workshop 34 Time tale of the 45-minute workshop Theme: Let’s separate red-and-white sticky buns into two groups. Formation: a team of two x 8 (make a team with same age people) How to proceed : Explanation about the game (Supervisor, 10 minutes) Provide kids with tools (staff, 1 minute) Show a model (staff, 5 minutes) -Show how to separate four sticky buns into two (explanation 1 minute, show 2 minutes) -Every team makes a practice (2 minutes) Explanation of rules (Supervisor, 5 minutes) Thinking up a game (Every team, 10 minutes) -Round 1 (5 minutes) First team shows their game (1 minute) Second team finds a solution (2 minutes) Second team shows their solution to first team (2 minutes) -Round 2 (5 minutes) Second team shows their game (1 minute) First team finds a solution (2 minutes) First team shows their solution to second team (2 minutes) *Staff judges both teams in a group. *Show the best game to other teams in the room. Summary of the workshop (Supervisor, 5 minutes) The purpose of the game and how the game relates to learning math.
