American Dental Education Association ADEA Allied Dental Policy Statements In 2003, the ADEA House of Delegates approved new Allied Dental Policy Statements that specified:  The term “dental education” is defined as inclusive of all academic dental, allied dental, and advanced dental institutions.  A minimum number of academic years of allied dental education.  The inclusion of the value and application of scientific concepts in the curriculum.  Preparing graduates for new and emerging roles and responsibilities.

7. American Dental Education Association ADEA Policy Statements  Minimum faculty qualifications and education requirements.  Inclusion of allied dental faculty in programs of faculty and career development in education, research, and public service.  Emphasis on the oral health care team rather than working with allied dental personnel.  Reaffirmation of entry-level competencies into the dental hygiene profession.  Support for all levels of accredited education.

American Dental Education Association ADEA Scholarships and Awards  ADEA/Oral-B Laboratories Scholarship for Dental Hygiene Students Pursuing Academic Careers – Two $2,000 scholarships for dental hygiene students pursuing academic careers.  ADEA/Sigma Phi Alpha Linda DeVore Scholarship – A $1,000 scholarship recognizing an individual pursuing allied dental education study at the bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral degree level.  ADEA/Colgate-Palmolive Allied Dental Educators Fellowship – A $4,000 stipend for participation in the ADEA Leadership Institute or a three-month fellowship at the ADEA Office in Washington, DC, only for allied dental educators

9. American Dental Education Association ADEA Scholarships and Awards Open to Allied Dental Educators  ADEA/Sunstar Americas, Inc. Harry W. Bruce, Jr. Legislative Fellowship – A $15,000 stipend to pursue a cumulative three-month fellowship at the ADEA Office in Washington, DC, working on issues on the legislative agenda  ADEA/William J. Gies Foundation William J. Gies Education Fellowship – A $10,000 stipend to pursue a cumulative three-month fellowship at the ADEA Office in Washington, DC, researching educational issues  ADEA/ADEA Council of Students/VitalSource Technologies, Inc. Junior Faculty Award – A $2,500 award to be used to enhance teaching, research, or service efforts  ADEA/VitalSource Technologies, Inc. Dental Education Award  ADEA/Zimmer Dental Implant Education Teaching Award

10. American Dental Education Association New ADEA Fellowship  The ADEA/GlaxoSmithKline Dental Hygiene Teaching Fellowship began in 2007.  Up to three dental hygiene educators will be selected from Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Program participants (past and present) to serve as fellows for one year.  This program was launched at the 2007 ADEA Annual Session in New Orleans.

11. American Dental Education Association ADEA/William J. Gies Education Fellowship Three Gies Fellows have come from a dental hygiene background:  Dr. Phyllis Beemsterboer, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the School of Dentistry of Oregon Health & Science University  Prof. Nancy Zinser, Associate Dean for Health Sciences at Palm Beach Community College  Dr. Cindy Amyot, Director of Faculty Development and Distance Education at University of Missouri-Kansas City (and the 2007 recipient)

12. American Dental Education Association ADEA Support for Council Initiatives The ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors is now the only council with a dedicated special staff liaison, Dr. Linda Hanlon.

13. American Dental Education Association ADEA Support for Section Initiatives  The ADEA Section on Dental Hygiene Education is one of the largest and most active of the ADEA sections.  The ADEA Dental Assisting Education section, once shrinking, is now growing. Current membership is 337.  The ADEA Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinators group became a SIG in 2005.  Section and SIG activities are supported by the ADEA Staff Liaison to the Council of Sections, consistent with other sections and SIGs.

American Dental Education Association Explorehealthcareers.org, recently acquired by ADEA, is a free, multi- disciplinary, interactive health careers website designed to address workforce shortages in the health professions. The professions of dental hygiene, assisting, and lab technology are featured on the site. This ADEA website will provide us with the opportunity to address recruitment of allied dental students, with an emphasis on diversity. Extensive information about these careers is provided; plus DH and DA are featured as 2 of the top 10 fastest growing careers. The mission of EHC is to help solve two urgent problems in American health care: the under-representation of minorities in the workforce, and the lack of health professionals in medically underserved communities.

16. American Dental Education Association ADEA Supports the Dental Education Community When Disaster Strikes  ADEAassist was created as a way for ADEA to help schools and programs affected by Hurricane Katrina.  In anticipation of Hurricanes Rita and Wilma, ADEAassist advised schools and programs in the affected areas of opportunities for ADEA to help in the event of damage or interruption.  ADEAassist capitalized a permanent fund to aid any ADEA Institutional Member who may be impacted by disaster.

17. American Dental Education Association Licensure Initiatives  All ADEA initiatives related to national licensure include dental hygiene licensure.  Although the wording may at times refer to “dental licensure,” it is well understood by the practicing, licensing, education, and other communities to include licensure of dentists and dental hygienists.

American Dental Education Association Other Initiatives  ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors representative toolkit  Communities of Interest (COI) forum  In September all presentations and papers from the June Summit were posted in an online community for further discussion and comment. The 2007 Allied Faculty Leadership Institute launched a Community of Interest in June.

25. American Dental Education Association Participation on the ADEA Annual Session Planning Committee  Permanent appointment for a representative from the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors was made three years ago.

American Dental Education Association Future of New Opportunities for Allied Dental Providers The 2006 ADEA Allied Dental Education Summit addressed ways in which the practice of allied dental professions may change in the future, and ways in which allied dental educators need to prepare their graduates.

27. American Dental Education Association 2006 ADEA Allied Dental Summit Proceedings  Presents a series of recommendations to go to the ADEA Board of Directors as a result of Summit deliberations.  ADEA will help address the challenges that are before allied dental education.

American Dental Education Association ADEA Professional Development Opportunities for Allied Dental Faculty  The Allied Dental Program Directors’ Conference is ADEA’s second largest meeting after the ADEA Annual Session.  It was expanded several years ago to include all allied dental program directors (DH, DA, and DLT).  ADEA also holds DH and DA section meetings at Annual Session.

American Dental Education Association ADEA Leadership Development Opportunities for Allied Dental Faculty  A special leadership program for allied dental faculty held its fourth class this June.  This program was started at the request of the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors.  ADEA sponsors an annual Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Development Alumni Reception at Annual Session.

30. American Dental Education Association ADEA Professional Development Opportunities for Allied Dental Faculty  ADEA has raised nearly $500,000 over the past four years in support of the Annual Allied Dental Program Directors Conference and the Allied Dental Faculty Leadership Program

American Dental Education Association ADEA Leadership Development Opportunities for Allied Dental Faculty  The year-long ADEA Leadership Institute is open to allied dental faculty.  Graduates include 11 dental hygiene faculty and one dental assisting faculty; three of these were from community colleges and one was from a tribal college.

American Dental Education Association ADEA Supports the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors Through Advocacy ADEA is committed to pursuing its vision for the future of oral health care on Capitol Hill. During the 109 th Congress our advocacy efforts led to:  Passage of the National Institute of Health reauthorization with provisions offered by ADEA.  Passage of a stopgap measure to avert a federal funding crisis in the State Children’s Health Insurance Program.  Passage of the Ryan White CARE Act reauthorization including a new provision that designates oral health as a “core medical service.”

American Dental Education Association ADEA Supports the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors Through Advocacy  Oral health’s new designation as a “core medical service” ensures that more Ryan White CARE Act funding can be targeted to oral health care services.  Academic dental institutions have been reimbursed more than $111 million from the CARE Act’s Dental Reimbursement Program for HIV/AIDS oral health care provided to patients.  Despite the plans of the administration and some in Congress to discontinue the Community-based Dental Partnership Program, ADEA was able to preserve the program with no changes.

38. American Dental Education Association JDE Online bonus: Access to 1,000+ journals  The JDE is online through HighWire Press. HighWire hosts more than 1,000 other journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA), and the Journal of Dental Research (JDR).  A significant bonus to being an ADEA Member and JDE reader is what’s known as “Inter-Journal Toll-Free Citation Linking.” You may find an article in the JDE and want to pursue the references. If the cited articles are from journals hosted on HighWire, you can read the full text even if you are not a subscriber, provided you follow citation links from the JDE.  The converse is also true. Other journals on HighWire are linked with the JDE. So someone reading the New England Journal of Medicine or the Journal of the American Dental Association, for example, would have direct access to JDE articles cited in those journals.

American Dental Education Association ADEA Open Membership (as of June 2007)  Since Open Membership began, 38 new allied institutional members have joined.  ADEA Section on Dental Hygiene Education now has 1,666 members.  ADEA Section on Dental Assisting Education now has 337 members!  752 members have joined the ADEA Dental Hygiene Clinic Coordinators SIG.  There are 101 active affiliate allied dental institutional members in addition to the 26 allied programs in dental school settings.
