1 How Maps Reflect Change SOL WG.1e

2 Why do maps change over time?
A. Our knowledge of the world has increased. B. Names change over time. C. Boundaries change.

3 Knowledge Knowledge increased by: Exploration of the world
Technology such as satellites GIS mapping software for computers  GIS is “real-time” and layers maps to see patterns. (a “sandwich of maps”)  Can see the entire World from above! Columbus would’ve been jealous!

4 Place Names Names of places change Examples: Formosa -> Taiwan
China claims it owns Taiwan. B. Palestine –> Israel Palestinians own West Bank and Gaza Strip but Israel controls them

5 Boundaries Boundaries Change: Decolonization Wars
Break-up of large country into small ones United Nations

6 Decolonization Colonization is when a country takes over other countries or parts of the world. ->1800s European countries control Africa. In the 1960s African nations got independence and the map was redrawn Q: If you had to redraw the boundaries of countries what might be some things you would consider when making a new map? Q: What would happen if you got that wrong?
