Country Profile 2 nd largest country in the world by land area. One of the last five communist states. Fast-rising superpower. Bordered by 14 countries including Vietnam, North Korea, Pakistan and India.

International relations PRC maintains diplomatic relations with most countries. However, it does not recognize the Republic of Taiwan, and does not maintain diplomatic relations with any country that does. Has a permanent seat on the UN security council. Close ally of North Korea.

International relations(continued) Has been embroiled in disputes over borders with its neighbours, such as Nepal and India (Aksai Chin and Arunachal Pradesh) China’s constant opposition to Japan and India’s requests to become permanent members of the UNSC causes friction between the countries.

Country’s Economy China’s economy has grown by leaps and bounds since liberalization in 1978. Success mostly due to manufacturing industry as a low-cost producer.

Country’s Stand China takes a rigid stand on anti-piracy regarding the issue of increasing cases of piracy off the Coast of Somalia. However, China opposes direct intervention of any sort in Somalia for fear of setting up a precedent for intervention in a country experiencing similar problems with breakaway regions. China recognizes that with its improved military and economic strength, it has a larger role to play in maintaining world peace and security and is willing to take up more proactive positions in its foreign policies
