2  Adjective  Definition: ruins or dilapidated(in a state of disrepair or ruin as a result of age or neglect)  Haroun and the Sea of Stories quote: “There was once, in the country of Alifbay… a city so ruinously sad it had forgotten its name” (1).  My sentence: The old shaky, ripped up castle was so ruinous that if the adventures took one step inside it would collapse.

3  Verb  Definition: cease or abstain  HSS quote:” So now kindly desist from this Iffing and Butting and be happy with the stories you enjoy.” (18)  Me sentence: The dog had to desist from inhaling the wonderful smell and taste of BBQ ribs.

4  Noun  Definition: a confused fight, skirmish, or scuffle(usually in numbers  HHS quote:” And from time to time some dizzy fellow with ripped clothes would burst out of the melee, triumphantly waving a piece of paper”(32)  My sentence: Even though how small you think the children might be Tommy and Richard got in a melee against Finn and Max over who sat next to the new kid first.

5 part of speech: adjective define: characterized by fluency and persuasiveness The lawyer was so eloquent with his words that he could turn the tides on any case. “For this reason I have turned, eloquent Mr. Rashid, to you”(47).

6 part of speech: adjective define: having an unpleasant or foul odor The malodorous fish skeletons lay rotting on the beach. “A few moments later that malodorous mist tore apart like the shreds of an old shirt drifted away on a cool night breeze”(50).

7  Adjective  Rich and luxurious or lavished  “The uniformed boatmen showed Rashid and Haroun to their bedrooms, which turned out to be even more opulent than the lounge”(52).  The wealthy mans suit was very opulent and finely pressed.

8  Noun  A thought, reflection, or contemplation  “It’s wasn’t entirely a pleasant feeling to have one’s private ruminations bugged by a mechanical bird” (66).  When Steve’s mom called Steve for breakfast, she interrupted his ruminations about his strange dream last night.

9  Verb  Turn away  “The Wishwater gave off so dazzling a light that Haroun had to avert his gaze” (69).  Karen told her daughter Lindsey to advert her eyes from the sun or she will damage her eyesight.
