2 2 Why are we here? You have been appointed as a Supervisor by your employer To discuss the importance of displaying the correct behaviours You will play a key role in the health & safety on this project and the standards of workmanship in our workplaces.

3 3 What the course brings A clear understanding of what is expected of you, Advice on actions/protocols with which you must comply, Clarity of your responsibility to Carillion and your workforce, A greater understanding of our expectations and your role and responsibilities on Carillion Projects.

5 5 Your Role You represent your Company/Employer on site. Your Role is key in delivering safety on site. We need you to: Lead by example Your behaviour will affect how others act Support us to make the site incident free We have a target of zero reportable accidents Play your part Take on board what we are about to explain to you Make yourself known Supervisors on Carillion sites are required to wear black hats so that they can be readily identified

7 7 Being a Manager In your role as a Supervisor you are appointed to manage your people and put them to work safely. You are responsible to ensure that your workforce is provided with necessary information, including relevant aspects of other contractors’ work. Ensure they are communicated to and consulted with on all matters of Health and Safety You are responsible to ensure compliance with Carillion policies and procedures, site rules, your company policies etc. Ensuring that your people have: Safe access and egress, A safe place of work, Have and understand the safe system of work, The right tools and equipment.

8 8 Being a Leader In your role as a Supervisor you will be expected to demonstrate good leadership by: Leading by example Setting high standards Demonstrating commitment Being accountable for safety on the project Engaging with the Workforce Driving Continuous Improvement Integrating safety into your everyday activity

11 11 SAFETY FIRST Carillion Requires that you put Safety First. This means: Plan, Manage and Monitor your own works, Ensure that a safe system of work is agreed and adhered to, Ensure your workforce is competent, Provision of adequate resources, Co-operate and co-ordinate with others working on the project.

12 12 An Effective Supervisor Will Visit the workplace often to check on safety Explain to the team that we expect safety excellence Help the team to solve any conflicts Challenge poor safety behaviour Be enthusiastic and encourage participation Seek and listen to my team’s concerns and ideas Recognise good practice, and deal with poor performance. Act fast on safety issues. Take time to plan work, assess risks and explain methods Encourage the team to stop the job if they have concerns. Carefully re-assess risks when things change Help the team to recognise & manage hazards & risks Be aware of each team’s strengths and areas for training and development Support, coach and involve my team Hold regular safety discussions with my team Ensure my team understands their responsibilities Deliver H&S Excellence Encourage Others Involve Your Team Promote Risk Awareness Supervisors Will Accept Challenge yourself Plan ahead, think ‘what could go wrong’

13 13 Worker Engagement In your role as a Supervisor you will be expected to engage with Carillion, your workforce and other Contractors through the following Forums: DWB SAG Daily Briefings POWRAs Work Stoppages Daily 4Cs Task Talks

15 15 Focus Areas In your role as a Supervisor you will be expected to consider and plan for key hazards and risks. Top 5 High Risk Areas: Working at Height Fire/Explosion Electricity Trapped/Crushed Vehicle Movements Focus Areas Foot & Ankle Incidents Vehicle related Incidents

16 16 Before Putting People to Work Think! Task Competence/Inductions? POWRA/Work Plans/Method statements? Work plan still current? Inspections/POWA? Permits? PPE? Lift Plan? Exclusion zone/Work area? Safe use of equipment? Plant operators? Interface with others? Previous hazards? Your supervision regime/Discipline? Communication 4Cs? DWB? SAG?

17 17 Carillion Commitments Ensure that you have up to date relevant information to brief your teams Be open, communicating with honesty, listening to others, focussed on building trust Work together to deliver the best outcome, respecting the capabilities of everyone involved. Ensure you have a good standard of welfare and a healthy working environment Ensure that there are safe access routes to and from your work areas, well lit and without hazards. Challenge inappropriate behaviours and unsafe acts. Respect each other’s needs, being reliable and supportive. Looking out for each other and working with you to share risks and rewards. Take pride in our work, with the passion and enthusiasm to achieve our best Communicate lessons learnt from accidents and incidents so as to prevent recurrence. Challenge what we do and being brave about suggesting change. Welcome ideas and learning from others

18 18 Supervisor Commitments Improve communication - spend 10 mins on a daily briefing/engaging with YOUR teams Ensure that they are put to work SAFELY! Review Safe System of Work - Appropriate use of Point of Work Risk Assessments Review all work at height to prevent materials/ tools falling Ensure appropriate permits are in place where required. Challenge inappropriate behaviours and unsafe acts Full attendance at 4Cs Learn from incidents and communicate to your teams Identify interpreters working with non-English speaking teams Protect against trip hazards Review lifting operations To spend 10 mins at the end of each day on housekeeping

20 20 Recognising the Right Culture - Hearing Friendly atmosphere Hear understanding of culture requirements on site Proactive statements from CB team and supervisors Worker engagement with Supervisors, communicating unsafe activities Good positive feedback from workforce Requesting feedback and help/advise – with suitable answers Collaborative conversations - People conversing/exchanging ideas/communicating positively & with respect. Debating the next activity Supervisors talking to fellow supervisors & directing their workers

21 21 Recognising the Right Culture - Seeing A site where you would want to work Clearly identified walking routes/segregation Barriers around trenches/excavations Generally clean, tidy & well maintained – including welfare facilities Materials stored tidily & appropriately Don’t Walk By boards/Hazard & information boards with contact numbers visible High visibility of PPE wearing - correct levels - permit holders vests etc Presence of Supervisors supervising Respect

22 22 Recognising the Right Culture - Feeling Able to pass comment & that any suggestions will be valued and encouraged Good atmosphere with the team - that they are in control, competent, totally committed and have positive attitudes SAFE - not feel at risk, threatened or in danger Reassured that site is under control and well managed. Good morale with a friendly happy workforce A sense of achievement & proud to be associated with the team, part of the project and the business

No Accidents, Incidents or Near Misses No Broken Bones No Lost Time Incidents No Near Misses No unsafe or inappropriate behaviour (only 80% of workers behave in the way we want), We want to see: POWRA carried out, Full attendance at Coordination Meetings, Risk actively discussed on site with the workforce, Plant, tools and equipment in good condition and regularly inspected, DWBs reported and actioned promptly, A clean and tidy site A happy workforce This can only happen with your full active co-operation
