6 Research Protections Program Christina Moord RPP Coordinator 331-3197 GVSU Uses IRB Net Human Subjects Submission Factoids (2012 data) 580 HRRC Submissions (37% New Projects, 20% Continuing Reviews, 31% Revisions, 12% Closures) It takes ~22 days from submission of protocol to determination 95% of the protocols are approved with only 1 revision Protocol submissions have increased by 10% last year.

7 Technology Commercialization Office Linda Chamberlain Fellow 331-2281 Evaluates intellectual property of faculty and students Assists in the protecting of the intellectual property (patents, copyrights, trademarks) Assists faculty with collaborative agreements with both public and private institutions

8 What is research? the systematic process of collecting and analyzing information in order to increase our understanding of the phenomenon with which we are concerned Research originates with a question Research requires a clear articulation of a goal Research follows a specific plan of procedure Research requires the collection and interpretation of data in attempting to resolve the problem Research builds on previous research

9 Consider a general area in which you want to conduct your research Start reading in your interest area including theses of current or former students Start formulating ideas as you read Keep a research notebook or journal Once you have decided to a research project consider – – Do you need approval from RPP? (Human, Animal, or Lab) – Do you need funding to be successful? – Can the project be done in the timeframe of degree? – Where and when should I disseminate my work?
