1 Project Snapshot Organization: DOVE (Development of Village Education) Objective: Awareness creation on Rural Sanitation and Promoting Kitchen gardens through training, community participation and campaign activities in 15 villages in Tamil Nadu

2 Location and People Location: Tamil Nadu – 15 Villages selected for implementing the Project: Nochikulam, Chettikulam, Thiruvaranganeeri, Palaniappapuram Karungadal, Peikulam, Mela Kerungadal, Pannamparai, Komaneri, Pudukulam, Arivanmozhi, Semmbankudieruppu, Ambalaseeri, Elamalkulam, Amuthunnakudi Occupation of People: Palmyra tappers, landless laborers, coolies and helpers in construction sites, brick kilns and lime industries.

3 Goals of DOVE Village centered activities with regard to education, sanitary condition, environmental awareness, health care and infrastructure development in a phased manner targeting the villages of Sathankulam Taluk. Involve women in development activities by giving them awareness education and trainings. Organize and form women Self Help Groups in every village and make it as an entry point to introduce savings culture and equip them to deal with local issues. Give training to women entrepreneurs so that they will be helped to embark business ventures by the help of micro credit programs. Impart vocational training and skill development for the youth to generate Self employment. Take a survey of the available raw materials available in every village so that income generation programs could be initiated at a later stage.

4 Need of the Project Litter all around roads and houses Lack of proper drainage– no toilets in villages Cattle in plenty – cow dung not cleaned – affects sanitary conditions Stagnant water around villages - making it a hot bed for waterborne and mosquito borne infectious diseases. High pollution - Smoke emanating from chemical and match factories Big families in small dwellings – not proper sanitation habits No medical facility in area – no access to doctors – diseases not diagnosed Lack of basic health care – affects pregnant women/children more Minimal Literacy level, acute poverty in the interior parts of villages - children more encouraged to go for daily labor instead of schools.

5 Objectives of the project Educate people about the need to keep their houses and the surroundings clean Remove the factors contributing to poor sanitary condition of the villages. Protect the people from various diseases spread out of stagnation of waste water and open defecation. Arrange toilet facilities in every house over a time frame. Cultivate hygienic qualities in the minds of the children. Conduct awareness programs in the villages regarding health and sanitation. Promote Kitchen garden concept so that people will get a nutritious rich diet and can make good use of cow dung for manure

6 Implementation of the Project Members: 1 coordinator & 5 health workers for 15 villages ( Each health worker will be allotted 3 villages) Member Activities: Forming of groups and organizing youth to take up rural sanitary measures. Groups will be activated to undertake clearing campaigns, regular sanitary measures, removing of piled up garbage and wastes. Education on personal health and hygiene, ill effects of unhygienic factors leading to spread of diseases, importance of taking vegetables and greens in their daily diet Health care of babies, pregnant women, old age people and lactating mother will be given attention and follow up actions will be taken.

7 Implementation Contd.. Cleaning Campaigns: Each group member will take up the responsibility of cleaning the village every Sunday. Timetable for this purpose will be slated and put up in a common place. Irrespective of age, children as well as old age people will join the cleaning campaign Using Visual Medium: TVs and VCRs will be taken to the villages and TV films on model villages will be screened to them. Interesting as well as informative films on how to keep a village clean and also its positive impact on the health of the people. Every Sunday after the cleaning campaign is over cine- film and cine-songs video clippings - in appreciation of their voluntary work.

8 Implementation Contd.. Promoting Kitchen Gardens: Education on the need of providing a green cover to surroundings and its positive effects to the eco system Every house members will be asked to plant trees in front of their house depending upon the availability of space. Trees such as Neems having medicinal effect will be encouraged to be grown Education on how to maintain a kitchen garden in their courtyards - variety of vitamin rich plant recommendations Young girls will be shown to raise flower plants in the kitchen garden.

9 Training Programs Numbers: 4 training Programs for the staff, and 5 Training Programs for the women and the village people. Each training will last two days. Topics covered: Preventive aspects of village health care. The common diseases attacking village people and steps to avert the contributing factors. First aid Knowledge on polio awareness and preventive measures taken by the government and the international bodies. Knowledge on kitchen gardens. - Natural manure to be used for small gardens instead of fertilizers and pesticides. Knowledge on simple varieties of vegetables and greens Schemes available for low cost latrines.

10 Training Contd.. Training for Women: Simple tips about the concept of small family norms. Care to be taken during pre natal and postnatal stages. Looking after the babies to take proper treatment for common diseases, giving polio drops. Kitchen Garden Concepts. Medical Camps: Inviting specialist doctors from various fields from city hospitals. Screening of the patients and refer those who need further treatment to the city government hospitals. Chronic Asthma, T.B., and major diseases affecting the people will be given treatment. Detecting reproductive health problems among the women.

11 Expected outcomes Villagers will observe and follow hygienic measures. Villages will be rid of disease contributing factors. Stagnant and piling of wastes will be utilized for raising gardens and the villages will wear a new look. Decrease in infectious diseases Improved health advice for pregnant women and lactating mothers for better care for their children Individual kitchen gardens and community park in the villages contributing for environmental improvement.

12 Budget Recurring: 1.Salary for the 5 health workers ( Rs. 1200 X 5 X 12 Months ) - Rs. 72,000.00 2.Salary for the Coordinator ( Rs. 2500 X 1 X 12 Months ) - Rs. 30,000.00 Total Recurring - Rs. 1,02,000.00 Non – Recurring: 1. Training for the women groups ( 5 Trainings X Rs. 7000 ) - Rs. 35,000.00 2. Training for the youth ( 5 Training X Rs. 7000 ) - Rs. 35,000.00 3.Training for the health workers ( 4 X Rs. 3000) - Rs. 12,000.00 4.Expenditure on Visual Programs - Rs. 8,000.00 5.Miscellaneous expenditure - Rs. 4,000.00 TOTAL - Rs. 94,000.00 GRAND TOTAL FOR PROJECT -Rs. 1,96,000.00 Local Contribution - Rs. 20,000.00 AID REQUESTED - Rs. 1,76,000.00 = approx ($3,700)
