2 R EADING S URVEY What books have you finished reading lately? What do you read at home? What do you read at work? What are 3 things you do well as a reader? What are 3 things you would like to work on to become a better reader?

3 R EADING E NGAGEMENT Primary Book Selection:  Selects a variety of texts that are “just right” most of the time  Identifies a favorite book by title and tells about a particular event Sustained Reading:  Sustains independent reading for an extended period of time (10-20 min)

4 S UMMER SUPPORT Talk about books Set aside time to read Talk about reading strengths Set some summer goals

5 R EADING E NGAGEMENT Intermediate Wide Reading  Lists a wide variety of titles from 2-3 genres  Or multiple titles from one genre  Generally books that are “just right” Self-Assessment / Goal setting  Identifies 2-3 specific strengths  Identifies 1-2 specific goals related to the reading process

6 O RAL READING FLUENCY Monitoring / Self-correcting  Self corrects miscues quickly; problem solves tricky words independently Phrasing  Reads in longer meaningful phrases; heeds punctuation Expression  Expression conveys meaning; emphasizing key words Accuracy/Rate  Reads text 95-100% accurately

7 COMPREHENSION Questioning /Predicting  Thoughtful questions and predictions related to the text previewed Retelling  Retelling is sequential, BMD, includes character /detail/ and vocabulary from the text Summary  Summary is in their own words, includes important events, characters, and vocabulary

8 S UMMER SUPPORT Genuine discussion about reading Ask about characters Ask about new/interesting facts Ask about details Ask about key events

9 COMPREHENSION Reflection  Significant message is identified with sound reason; reflects higher level thinking Connection  Thoughtful connection that reflects synthesis / inference Interpretation/ Inference  Insightful understanding of important textual implications; supporting details

10 S UMMER SUPPORT Talk about why the story / text was written Ask about connections to the text…restate and ask for more Think together about the meaning of the book Enjoy books together…be a summer bookclub Get to know the amazing thoughts hiding inside your child’s mind
