2 ESS is a neutron spallation source made possible by a collaboration of European countries ESS is located in southern Sweden adjacent to MAX-IV (A 4 th generation light source) European Spallation Source (ESS)

3 ESS – Neutron facilities and bridging the neutron gap ESS long pulse is more powerful and 30 - 100 times brighter than existing facilities Compliments existing short pulse neutron scattering facilities

4 Linac ESS linac will be the most powerful proton linac Average beam power of 5 MW Peak beam power of 125 MW Acceleration to 2 GeV Peak proton beam current of 62.5 mA Pulse length of 2.86 ms at a rate of 14 Hz (4% duty factor) 97% of acceleration provided by superconducting cavities 150 individual high power RF sources 80% of the RF power sources requiring over 1.1 MW of peak RF power ~ 200 M€ on the RF system alone

12 Scope and Charge to the Review Committee 12 Scope The scope of this review is the requirements established for the conventional facilities (i.e. buildings and utilities) associated with the Target Building and Instrument Halls. Charge The committee is asked to address the following questions: Are the requirements for the facility complete? Are the requirements clearly stated and sufficiently justified? Do the building design concepts adequately meet the requirements? Comment if the building design concepts exceed the scope of the requirements.

13 Deliverables… 13 Review Deliverables A report in PowerPoint format is expected at the end of the review. The report should address each of the charge items in terms of: Findings – What the project told the review committee Comments – What the review committee thinks of what was presented and suggestions for future efforts. Recommendations – What the committee feels strongly that the project should do.
