1 POEtry Terms Stanza – A group of consecutive lines in a poem that form a single unit. Rhythm – Musical quality produced by the repetition of stressed and unstressed syllables or by the repetition of certain sound patterns.

2 POEtry Devices Alliteration – The repetition of the same (or very similar) consonant sounds in words that are close together. – Used to help form rhythm. – Examples: T ongue t ied and t wisted/Just an earth bound misfit H orton H ears a Wh o S uzy s ells s eashells by the s eashore

3 POEtic Devices Refrain – A repeated sound, word, phrase, line, or group of lines. – Example: I loved my friend He went away from me There's nothing more to say The poem ends, Soft as it began- I loved my friend. -- by Langston Hughes

4 POEtic Devices Internal Rhymes – Rhymes within a line – Helps create rhythm – Examples: The Cat in the Hat was not a fan of that I lost my dog in the fog

5 POEtic Devices External Rhymes (aka End Rhymes) – When words at the ends of lines rhyme – Example Darkness settles on roofs and walls, But the sea, the sea in the darkness calls; The little waves, with their soft, white hands, Erase the footprints in the sands, And the tide rises, the tide falls. Rhyme Scheme – The pattern of end rhymes in a poem. The rhyme scheme from the poem above is AABBA.

6 POEtic Devices Onomatopoeia – The use of a word whose sound imitates or suggests its meaning. Examples: – Boom, crash, clap, bang Personification – When an author gives nonliving things living or human qualities. Example: – The moon crawled across the sky.
