Where did you go after school today? You didn‘t come home for lunch. I had lunch with Jil and Zane, her guest from Latvia. We did some live shopping. Grandma, I have got a question. Did you do this kind of shopping when you were young? Oh no! I don‘t even know what it is. In former times, shopping was very different and no fun…

Shopping

Past vs. Today corner shop (very small shops) → shopping malls shopping with parents → shopping with friends things were bought in pounds (500g) → things are bought in packages almost every district/city had a market-day → there are barely any market-days with big markets prices were cheaper→ a lot of things are more expensive

shopping was necessary → it‘s like a hobby shops closed very early, at 6.30 p.m. and on Saturdays at 2 p.m. → A lot of shops are open until 8 or 10 p.m. and propose also,,Midnight-Shopping‘‘

Mail-Order-Catalogues first catalogue published in 1872 only one page things are illustrated and there‘s a short description of the product examples of clothes : Neckermann and Bonprix

Online-Shopping it‘s carried out on the internet there are also applications for smartphones example: Zalando (since 2008)

Live - Shopping Trend from the USA A product is offered for a certain period on TV, so the customer has to buy it immediately by phone

Yes mum, I bought a guidebook for travelling to Latvia. The modern travelguides that people take along for holidays don‘t look like yours. Oh that‘s really different… Did you buy anything, darling?

For example, could you present some travel guides of the past and today? That‘s a good idea. Maybe we can better understand the development from past travel guides to modern ones. Yes, sure! I will show you a travel guide of the past and today. They‘re about Sicily, Crete and London.

published in 2000 published in 1978 Travel guide analysis

But are the contents of the travel guides from the past and of today the same? Which travel guides have information about what kind of sights? In which travel guides can you find more information about events and restaurants? Here you can see the new travel guide from 2005 on the left and the old one from 1979 on the right.

In travel guides of the past, you can find more pages with general information about a city or a country. Example: London 1980 50% of the pages 2012 13% of the pages On the left is the old one from 1980 and on the right is the new one from 2012

Travel guides of the past always have a lot of information about culture, monuments and art, but very little information about shopping. Modern ones have more information about very famous sights and shopping malls. In today‘s travel guides you can find more information about restaurants, pubs, events, parties and beaches than in the old ones.

Here you see pages of the new travel guide (2005). Here you can see pages of the old travel guide (1979). Here is 2012 on the left and 1980 on the right.

To sum it up: Travel guides adapt to the changing interests and demands of tourists in respect to a city or a country.

Grandma, when you were a child which technological means of entertainment did already exist? Well, if you look back in history and when I cast back my mind, the technological development was important and changed our lives….
