9. ELECTRICITY Circuit symbols It is often difficult to draw electrical circuits, so we use circuit symbols instead. Wires are shown as straight lines between the different circuit symbols. The difference between the symbol for a cell and the symbol for a battery: what we usually call a single battery, such as one you might buy for your torch is actually called a cell - it is only when you have two or more of these cells connected together that you get a battery. M Motor Open switch (off) Circuit diagrams A circuit diagram is to use circuit symbols instead of drawing each component in the circuit. Always try to make the wires straight lines, and don't be tempted to make them wiggly. The whole point is to make it easier to see what is connected to what

10. ELECTRICITY- PART 3 3. Switches When a switch is open (off), there is a gap in the circuit. Electricity cannot travel around the circuit. When a switch is closed (on), it makes the circuit complete. Electricity can travel around the circuit.

11. KEEPING WARM WATER BOILS BODY TEMPERATURE AVERAGE ROOM TEMPERATURE Thermal Insulators keep things warm and cold. Polystyrene is a good insulator, to keep food warm. Plastic and bubble wrap are good insulators too! Thermal conductors allow heat to flow through them Saucepans are made of metal because it allows the heat to flow through it. WATER FREEZES
