Prisms Prism – Every prism has two congruent faces which are polygonal regions and lie in parallel planes. These polygonal regions are called bases.

Prisms Lateral Faces – The faces of the prism that connect the bases. The lateral faces are all parallelograms. Lateral Edges – The edges in which the lateral faces intersect one another.

Prisms Classifying prisms – Prisms are classified according to two properties: 1.The relationship of the lateral edges to the planes containing the bases. 2.The shape of their bases.

Prisms Right Prism – Lateral edges are perpendicular to the planes containing the bases. In a right prism, the lateral faces are rectangles. Oblique Prism – Lateral edges are neither perpendicular nor parallel to the planes containing the bases.

Prisms Lateral Area – The sum of the areas of all the lateral faces. Lateral Area of a Prism If a right prism has a lateral area of L square units, a height of h units, and each base has a perimeter of P units, then L=P*h.

Example 3-1c Find the lateral area of the regular octagonal prism. Answer: 216 cm 2

Prisms Surface Area – The sum of the lateral area and the areas of the bases. Surface Area of a Prism If the surface area of a right prism is T square units, the height is h units, and each base has an area of B square units, then T= L + 2B

Example 3-2c Find the surface area of the triangular prism. Answer: 416 units 2

Example 3-3c Answer: 28 ft 2 A television is packaged in a box that is feet long, 2 feet wide, and 2 feet high. Find the surface area of the box.
