GARDEN CLUB In 1963, Mrs. Donald Ricks had an idea about beautifying the Hillcrest School grounds. She shared this idea with Mrs. W. C. Kalmar. They presented the concept to residents of the Green Acres Subdivision and the Green Acres Garden Club became a reality. Over the years, the club has been instrumental in maintaining the beautiful landscape around the school as well as the courtyard, “Secret Garden”.

PARTNERSHIP WITH THE LEAP SCHOOL At the May 2011 meeting, the garden club members decided to partner with the students at the newly formed charter school at Hillcrest Elementary to form a Junior Garden Club. Throughout the school year selected 5 th grade students attended the Green Acres Garden Club monthly meetings, and the school was hostess for the end of the year picnic to express their appreciation to the Garden Club member.

SEVEN HABITS LEADERSHIP MODEL

LEADERSHIP During the 2011-2012 school year, the students at Hillcrest Elementary were introduced to the Seven Habits of A Happy Kid. These are: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First Things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand then be Understood, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw

LEADER IN ME TRAINING During the summer of 2012, the staff at Hillcrest will be receive six days of training to effectively incorporate the Leader in Me curriculum into the 2012-2013 school year.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS The curriculum for the environmental piece of the LEAP rotation was provided by the Project Learning Tree, Project Wet and Project Wild Activity Guides. Mrs. Thomas was trained in the summer of 2011 at the weeklong Teacher Conservation Workshop in Mansfield, Georgia on these activities. The students learned to identify the trees on the school campus, counted the rings on a “tree cookie” to determine the age of the tree and dissected owl pellets.
