Pro-Biodiesel – Overcoming Non-Technological Barriers for full-scale use of Biodiesel in Europe Overcoming non-technological barriers for full-scale use of Biodiesel in Europe Project number: EIE-05-111 Duration: January 2006 - December 2007 December-2007

Pro-Biodiesel – Overcoming Non-Technological Barriers for full-scale use of Biodiesel in Europe Objective To promote Biodiesel as a competitive and commercial product in the European fuel market using the broadest range of raw materials and considering all the agents involved. ACCIONA Biocombustibles Repsol YPF ABI Univ Magdeburg CRES R esults Biodiesels obtained from 8 raw materials Support for improvement of EU regulations and standards Assessing the barriers of the logistic and distribution sector Actions (surveys, manuals, diffusion) for relieving the vehicle and market barriers www.probiodiesel.com

Pro-Biodiesel – Overcoming Non-Technological Barriers for full-scale use of Biodiesel in Europe The development of alternative fuels is an important priority in the EU policy (Directive 2003/30/EC) Background At the stage of the project definition in 2003, most of the EU biodiesel production and use was located in Germany, France and Italy. This situation continues at present There is a need of adoption of regulations and standards, and of overcoming the market barriers

Pro-Biodiesel – Overcoming Non-Technological Barriers for full-scale use of Biodiesel in Europe To promote Biodiesel as a competitive and commercial product in the European fuel market, using the broadest range of raw materials both from North and South Europe and considering all the agents involved. Objective & Main steps Characterizing pure biodiesels from at least 8 different raw materials Monitoring and proposing improvements to the EU regulations and European standards Assesing the specific barriers of the logistic and distribution sector Relieving the vehicle and market barriers Undertaking a broad dissemination programme

Pro-Biodiesel – Overcoming Non-Technological Barriers for full-scale use of Biodiesel in Europe Technical feasibility analyses: Study of biodiesel production from 8 different raw materials (7 vegetal oils + frying oil) Study of the 8 obtained pure biodiesels (including 5% and 30% biodiesel-fossil diesel blends with additives) according to requirements of EN-14214 biodiesel and EN-590 diesel standards Analysis of the effect of the 5% and 30% blends on distribution equipments (hoses, fill station pumps spare parts) Expected results Monitoring and proposing improvements to EU biodiesel/biofuels regulations and standards Relieving vehicle & market barriers Economic feasibility study of biodiesel production Surveys to entities and private biodiesel users in Germany, France and Spain Manual for biodiesel producers with recommendations for product launching strategy Information & training manual for vehicle salesmen
