Travel Travel is the movement of a person from one location to another location some distance away Person-trips take place overnight and at least 50 miles from home The tourism industry develops and markets destinations A destination marketing organization (DMO) promotes destinations to increase business

The Travel Industry The travel industry includes –domestic travel—travel within one country –international travel—travel between countries A travel agent works at a retail business that brings travelers and travel industry suppliers together A travel planner has many of the same duties as a travel agent but usually works in-house for a large corporation continued

The Travel Industry Travel agencies –are private businesses that promote travel sales to the public –make money from the supplies by receiving a percentage of the sales as a commission Economy of scale is achieved when a supplier can offer a reduced price because of large sales volume

(number of people and their ages) –What type of trip is it (business or leisure) and what transportation will be needed? –When is the trip? (urgency, reason) –Where is the destination? (location) –Why is the trip needed? (motivation)

Business Travel Business travel is done for sales, training, and functions related to work –One person or a small group may travel for a specific business purpose –May use dynamic packaging to meet specific needs –May involve meetings, events, and incentive (ME&I) travel, such as conventions –Incentive travel is a reward from a company to its employees for outstanding work

Leisure Travel Leisure travel is done for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment Travel for leisure may be done to –reach a vacation destination, such as the beach –attend an event, such as a sports game –visit friends and relatives (VFR)

Cars Car travel –is the most popular mode of leisure travel in the United States –provides maximum flexibility for travelers –is available to most people, either in their own cars or a rented vehicle –may be less expensive than other forms of travel, especially for families

Bus Travel Bus travel –is generally the safest and least expensive –offers flexibility –practices frequency with several departures daily or weekly by a carrier –may connect with transportation hubs, such as train stations, airports, and local bus or subway lines

Air Travel Air travel has the advantages of speed and convenience –The actual length of a flight is the elapsed flying time –Hub airports are especially busy Scheduled airlines offer planned flights over set routes Charter airlines fly only when contracted by clients

Travel Careers—Present and Future Increased travel has created a need for more workers in travel-related fields Increased security measures at airports and other transportation centers result in a need for more security personnel Many jobs in the travel industry require advanced education and training
