Computer Basics 4 By: Mr. Stanford

Computer Foundations Although it may be hard to imagine, not too long ago, personal computers did not exist. Since the 1970s, computers have changed the way people work and play, and computers now are apart of our everyday lives. Today, computers are used in businesses, in schools, and in many homes.

Computer Foundations People use computers to write, learn, draw, and solve math problems. Just as you must learn to read and write, you must learn to use a computer.

What you will learn You will learn what a computer is, the different parts of a computer, and some rules to follow when you use a computer.

What is a computer? A computer can help you learn about the world, work with numbers, write letters or stories, and play games. A computer is an electronic machine that takes data, stores and processes the data, and then produces information.

Computer Safety and Rules Ethics are rules to help you know whether something is right or wrong. Etiquette is how you behave. Netiquette is etiquette on the Internet.

Computer Safety and Rules Everyone must follow rules when using computers. Some rules protect computer hardware to keep it working. Some rules protect you when you work on the computer so you do not get hurt. Some rules protect others on the computer so they do not get hurt while working on a computer.

Protect Computers Computers are expensive. You must take care of a computer so it does not break. You cannot eat or drink while you work on a computer. Food or even water can harm a computer. Be sure your hands are clean before you type on a keyboard.

Protect Computers If you have any problems with a computer, ask your teacher or the person who is in charge for help. Do not put heavy objects on the computer. Do not bang or hit the hardware. Do not eat or drink near the computer.

Protect Computers A computer virus is not a mistake in programming. A computer virus is a program designed by a person on purpose to harm other people’s computers. Computer viruses are passed from computer to computer, just like a real virus is passes from person to person.

Protect Computers You can get viruses from sharing and downloading files. Viruses spread when you share files without using the right protection. You can protect your computer from viruses by using antivirus software. You install antivirus software on your computer to detect and remove viruses before they can do harm.

Protect Computers Some viruses will erase important files and make it so your computer does not work. Some viruses will make your computer display annoying messages or play sounds.

Protect You Make sure an adult knows when you are working on a computer. You always should work with programs that are meant for children your age. If you see something on the screen that scares you or makes you sad, quit the program and tell your teacher.

Protect Information You always should be considerate of others’ work. You should get permission to use things that are not yours. You never should copy somebody’s work or software without asking for permission. A copyright means the person who created the work also owns the work.

Protect Privacy Any information about you, your family, and your friends is personal. Do not give out names, addresses, or telephone numbers to anyone unless you have permission from them, a family member, or a teacher.

Protect Privacy Your friends, teachers, and family may save files on the same disk that you use. You know which files are yours because you give them meaningful names. Never open other people’s files unless you ask for permission.

Assignment / Computer Rules Create a poster containing at least 3 items you learned from the Power Point.
