4 I. Greek Religion A. Beliefs 1. Were polytheistic
2. Unlike the Hebrews, Persians, and Egyptians, Greek religion was not concerned with personal morality or life after death.

5 I. Greek Religion 3. Greeks used religion for the following three reasons: a. To explain nature (what caused lightning or thunder) b. To explain emotions that sometimes make people lose self-control c. They believed religion could bring them certain benefits in their current life. (a good harvest, good luck)

1. To explain their world Greeks created Myths, which are traditional stories about god, goddesses, and heroes. 2. Many of Western civilization’s symbols, metaphors, words, and idealized images come from ancient Greek mythology.

3. Each god had human qualities and personalities. 4. Greek gods were said to live on Mount Olympus in northern Greece.

1. Zeus – ruler of the gods 2. Hera – wife of Zeus, goddess of marriage

3. First held in 776 BC and events included boxing, foot races, javelin, and discus throwing. 4. The winners received wreaths of wild olive branches. There were no second or third place prizes.
